केचिद्विकल्पवसना आहुरात्मानमात्मनः । दैवमन्ये परे कर्म स्वभावमपरे प्रभुम् ।। १-१७-१९ ।।

Some of the philosophers, who deny all sorts of duality, declare that one’s own self is responsible for his personal happiness and distress. Others say that superhuman powers are responsible, while yet others say that activity is responsible, and the gross materialists maintain that nature is the ultimate cause. ।। 1-17-19 ।।

english translation

सभी प्रकार के द्वैत से इनकार करनेवाले कतिपय दार्शनिक यह घोषित करते हैं कि मनुष्य अपने सुख तथा दुख के लिए स्वयं ही उत्तरदायी हैं। अन्य लोग कहते हैं कि दैवी शक्तियाँ इसके लिए जिम्मेदार हैं, जबकि कुछ ऐसे भी लोग हैं, जो कहते हैं कि इसके लिए कर्म जिम्मेदार है और जो निपट भौतिकतावादी हैं, वे मानते हैं कि प्रकृति ही इसका अन्तिम कारण है। ।। १-१७-१९ ।।
