अरक्ष्यमाणाः स्त्रिय उर्वि बालान् शोचस्यथो पुरुषादैरिवार्तान् । वाचं देवीं ब्रह्मकुले कुकर्मण्यब्रह्मण्ये राजकुले कुलाग्र्यान् ।। १-१६-२१ ।।

sanskrit

Are you feeling compunction for the unhappy women and children who are left forlorn by unscrupulous persons? Or are you unhappy because the goddess of learning is being handled by brāhmaṇas addicted to acts against the principles of religion? Or are you sorry to see that the brāhmaṇas have taken shelter of administrative families that do not respect brahminical culture? ।। 1-16-21 ।।

english translation

क्या आप को उन दुखियारी स्त्रियों तथा बच्चों पर दया आ रही है, जिन्हें चरित्रहीन पुरुषों द्वारा अकेले छोड़ दी गई हैं? अथवा आप इसलिए दुखी हैं कि ज्ञान की देवी अधर्म में रत ब्राह्मणों के हाथ में हैं? या यह आप देख कर दुखी हैं कि ब्राह्मणों ने उन राजकुलों का आश्रय ग्रहण कर लिया है, जो ब्राह्मण संस्कृति का आदर नहीं करते? ।। १-१६-२१ ।।

The so-called administrators are now bewildered by the influence of this Age of Kali, and thus they have put all state affairs into disorder. Are you now lamenting this disorder? Now the general populace does not follow the rules and regulations for eating, sleeping, drinking, mating, etc., and they are inclined to perform such anywhere and everywhere. Are you unhappy because of this? ।। 1-16-22 ।।

english translation

अब तथाकथित प्रशासक इस कलियुग के प्रभाव से मोहग्रस्त हो गये हैं और इस तरह उन्होंने राज्य के सारे मामलों को अस्त-व्यस्त कर रखा है। क्या आप इस कुव्यवस्था के लिए शोक कर रही हैं? अब सामान्य जनता खाने, पीने, सोने तथा सहवास के विधि-विधानों का पालन नहीं कर रही है और वह सारे कार्य कहीं भी और कैसे भी करने के लिए सन्नद्ध रहती है। क्या आप इस कारण से अप्रसन्न हैं? ।। १-१६-२२ ।।

O mother earth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, incarnated Himself as Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa just to unload your heavy burden. All His activities here are transcendental, and they cement the path of liberation. You are now bereft of His presence. You are probably now thinking of those activities and feeling sorry in their absence. ।। 1-16-23 ।।

english translation

हे माता पृथ्वी, पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान् हरि ने तुम्हारे भारी बोझ को उतारने के लिए ही श्रीकृष्ण के रूप में स्वयं अवतार लिया। यहाँ के उनके सारे कार्य दिव्य हैं और वे मोक्ष-पथ को पक्का करनेवाले हैं। अब आप उनकी उपस्थिति से विहीन हो गई हैं। शायद अब आप उन्हीं कार्यों को सोच रही हैं और उनकी अनुपस्थिति में दुखी हो रही हैं। ।। १-१६-२३ ।।

Mother, you are the reservoir of all riches. Please inform me of the root cause of your tribulations by which you have been reduced to such a weak state. I think that the powerful influence of time, which conquers the most powerful, might have forcibly taken away all your fortune, which was adored even by the demigods. ।। 1-16-24 ।।

हे माता, आप सारे धन की खान हैं। कृपया मुझे अपने उन कष्टों का मूल कारण बतायें, जिससे आप इस दुर्बल अवस्था को प्राप्त हुई हैं। मैं सोचता हूँ कि अत्यन्त बलवानों को भी जीतनेवाले प्रबल काल ने देवताओं द्वारा वन्दनीय आपके सारे सौभाग्य को छीन लिया है। ।। १-१६-२४ ।।

The earthly deity [in the form of a cow] thus replied to the personality of religious principles [in the form of a bull]: O Dharma, whatever you have inquired from me shall be known to you. I shall try to reply to all those questions. Once you too were maintained by your four legs, and you increased happiness all over the universe by the mercy of the Lord. ।। 1-16-25 ।।

english translation

(गाय के रूप में) पृथ्वी देवी ने (बैल-रूप में) धर्म-रूप पुरुष को इस प्रकार उत्तर दिया : हे धर्म, आपने मुझसे जो भी पूछा है, वह आपको ज्ञात हो जायेगा। मैं आपके उन सारे प्रश्नों का उत्तर देने का प्रयास करूँगी। कभी आप भी अपने चार पाँवों द्वारा पालित थे और आपने भगवान् की कृपा से सारे विश्व में सुख की वृद्धि की थी। ।। १-१६-२५ ।।
