विमुक्तिः प्रत्ययः पूर्वः प्रत्ययश्चाणिमादिकम् ॥ इत्येतद्द्विविधं ज्ञेयं ध्यानस्यास्य प्रयोजनम् ॥ ५६ ॥

Vimukti is the first conviction, and the first conviction is the aṇimā. This is the twofold purpose of this meditation which should be understood.

vimuktiH pratyayaH pUrvaH pratyayazcANimAdikam ॥ ityetaddvividhaM jJeyaM dhyAnasyAsya prayojanam ॥ 56 ॥

ध्याता ध्यानं तथा ध्येयं यच्च ध्यानप्रयोजनम् ॥ एतच्चतुष्टयं ज्ञात्वा योगं युञ्जीत योगवित् ॥ ५७ ॥

The knower of Yoga shall practise Yoga with the knowledge of four things—the meditator, the meditation, the object of meditation and the benefit of meditation.

dhyAtA dhyAnaM tathA dhyeyaM yacca dhyAnaprayojanam ॥ etaccatuSTayaM jJAtvA yogaM yuJjIta yogavit ॥ 57 ॥

ज्ञानवैराग्यसंपन्नः श्रद्दधानः क्षमान्वितः ॥ निर्ममश्च सदोत्साही ध्यातेत्थं पुरुषः स्मृतः ॥ ५८ ॥

The meditator shall be a man who is endowed with knowledge and detachment, who is faithful, patient, who is free from ego and who is always enthusiastic.

jJAnavairAgyasaMpannaH zraddadhAnaH kSamAnvitaH ॥ nirmamazca sadotsAhI dhyAtetthaM puruSaH smRtaH ॥ 58 ॥

जपाच्छ्रांतः पुनर्ध्यायेद्ध्यानाच्छ्रांतः पुनर्जपेत् ॥ जपध्यनाभियुक्तस्य क्षिप्रं योगः प्रसिद्ध्यति ॥ ५९ ॥

A person who is tired of Japa shall begin meditation. A person who is tired of meditation shall begin Japa. A person who practises Japa and Dhyāna acquires Yoga quickly.

japAcchrAMtaH punardhyAyeddhyAnAcchrAMtaH punarjapet ॥ japadhyanAbhiyuktasya kSipraM yogaH prasiddhyati ॥ 59 ॥

धारणा द्वादशायामा ध्यानं द्वादशधारणम् ॥ ध्यानद्वादशकं यावत्समाधिरभिधीयते ॥ ६० ॥

Dhāraṇā extends upto the twelve-petalled lotus of the heart. Dhyāna is the fixation of the Dhāraṇā in the twelve-petalled lotus. When Dhyāna extends to the twelve-petalled lotus it is called Samādhi.

dhAraNA dvAdazAyAmA dhyAnaM dvAdazadhAraNam ॥ dhyAnadvAdazakaM yAvatsamAdhirabhidhIyate ॥ 60 ॥
