श्रीकृष्ण उवाच ॥ किमिदं लिंगमाख्यातं कथं लिंगी महेश्वरः ॥ कथं च लिंगभावो ऽस्य कस्मादस्मिञ्छिवो ऽर्च्यते ॥ ६ ॥
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said:— What is a Liṅga? How is lord Śiva a Liṅgin? How did he have the status of a Liṅga? Why is he worshipped in it?
english translation
zrIkRSNa uvAca ॥ kimidaM liMgamAkhyAtaM kathaM liMgI mahezvaraH ॥ kathaM ca liMgabhAvo 'sya kasmAdasmiJchivo 'rcyate ॥ 6 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptउपमन्युरुवाच ॥ अव्यक्तं लिंगमाख्यातं त्रिगुणप्रभवाप्ययम् ॥ अनाद्यनंतं विश्वस्य यदुपादानकारणम् ॥ ७ ॥
Upamanyu said:— The unmanifest is called the Liṅga. It is the source of attributes as well as that wherein the universe merges and dissolves. It has neither beginning nor end. It is the material cause of the universe.
english translation
upamanyuruvAca ॥ avyaktaM liMgamAkhyAtaM triguNaprabhavApyayam ॥ anAdyanaMtaM vizvasya yadupAdAnakAraNam ॥ 7 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतदेव मूलप्रकृतिर्माया च गगनात्मिका ॥ तत एव समुत्पन्नं जगदेतच्चराचरम् ॥ ८ ॥
It is the Māyā, the Mūlaprakṛti as extensive as the firmament. This universe including the mobile and immobile beings is born of that.
english translation
tadeva mUlaprakRtirmAyA ca gaganAtmikA ॥ tata eva samutpannaM jagadetaccarAcaram ॥ 8 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअशुद्धं चैव शुद्धं यच्छुद्धाशुद्धं च तत्त्रिधा ॥ ततः शिवो महेशश्च रुद्रो विष्णुः पितामहः ॥ ९ ॥
The universe is of three types: the impure, pure and the pure-impure. From the Liṅga are born Śiva, Maheśa, Rudra, Viṣṇu and Brahmā.
english translation
azuddhaM caiva zuddhaM yacchuddhAzuddhaM ca tattridhA ॥ tataH zivo mahezazca rudro viSNuH pitAmahaH ॥ 9 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptभूतानि चेन्द्रियैर्जाता लीयन्ते ऽत्र शिवाज्ञया ॥ अत एव शिवो लिंगो लिंगमाज्ञापयेद्यतः ॥ १० ॥
The Bhūtas with the sense-organs merge into this at the bidding of Śiva, He is Liṅgin since he commands the Liṅga.
english translation
bhUtAni cendriyairjAtA lIyante 'tra zivAjJayA ॥ ata eva zivo liMgo liMgamAjJApayedyataH ॥ 10 ॥
