लब्धविद्येन विधिना प्रजासृष्टिं वितन्वता ॥ प्रथमं सर्वशास्त्राणां पुराणं ब्रह्मणा स्मृतम्॥ ३१ ॥

Purāṇa, the first among the Śāstras, was learnt by Brahmā who had acquired the lore and began the creation of the subjects.

english translation

labdhavidyena vidhinA prajAsRSTiM vitanvatA ॥ prathamaM sarvazAstrANAM purANaM brahmaNA smRtam॥ 31 ॥

अनंतरं तु वक्त्रेभ्यो वेदास्तस्य विनिर्गताः ॥ प्रवृत्तिस्सर्वशास्त्राणां तन्मुखादभवत्ततः ॥ ३२ ॥

The Vedas came out of his mouths. The Śāstras too had their origin from him.

english translation

anaMtaraM tu vaktrebhyo vedAstasya vinirgatAH ॥ pravRttissarvazAstrANAM tanmukhAdabhavattataH ॥ 32 ॥

यदास्य विस्तरं शक्ता नाधिगंतुं प्रजा भुवि ॥ तदा विद्यासमासार्थं विश्वेश्वरनियोगतः ॥ ३३ ॥

When people on earth could not understand the details of this universe, Then, by the command of the Lord of the universe, for the purpose of summarizing knowledge.

yadAsya vistaraM zaktA nAdhigaMtuM prajA bhuvi ॥ tadA vidyAsamAsArthaM vizvezvaraniyogataH ॥ 33 ॥

द्वापरांतेषु विश्वात्मा विष्णुर्विश्वंभरः प्रभुः ॥ व्यासनाम्ना चरत्यस्मिन्नवतीर्य महीतले ॥ ३४ ॥

At the end of Dvāpara-yuga Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Soul of the universe, appeared as Lord Viṣṇu. He descends to this earth and moves about in the name of Vyasa.

dvAparAMteSu vizvAtmA viSNurvizvaMbharaH prabhuH ॥ vyAsanAmnA caratyasminnavatIrya mahItale ॥ 34 ॥

एवं व्यस्ताश्च वेदाश्च द्वापरेद्वापरे द्विजाः ॥ निर्मितानि पुराणानि अन्यानि च ततः परम् ॥ ३५ ॥

O Brahmins, in every Dvāpara Yuga the Vedas are classified by him. The Purāṇas and other texts are written by him.
