सर्वस्यैव जगन्मध्ये देह एवाशुचिर्भवेत् ॥ तन्मलावयवस्पर्शाच्छुचिरप्यशुचिर्भवेत् ॥ १६ ॥

In the midst of the entire universe, the body alone is the most unclean. By touching its filthy limbs even the pure becomes impure.

english translation

sarvasyaiva jaganmadhye deha evAzucirbhavet ॥ tanmalAvayavasparzAcchucirapyazucirbhavet ॥ 16 ॥

गंधलेपापनोदार्थ शौचं देहस्य कीर्तितम् ॥ द्वयस्यापगमाच्छुद्धिश्शुद्धस्पर्शाद्विशुध्यति ॥ १७॥

The purification of the body is for removing bad odour and sliminess. If both are removed there is purity. The touch of a pure thing also sanctifies it.

english translation

gaMdhalepApanodArtha zaucaM dehasya kIrtitam ॥ dvayasyApagamAcchuddhizzuddhasparzAdvizudhyati ॥ 17॥

गंगातोयेन सर्वेण मृद्भारैः पर्वतोपमैः ॥ आमृत्योराचरेच्छौचं भावदुष्टो न शुध्यति ॥ १८ ॥

But let him be cleaned with all the waters of the Gaṅgā, with heaps of sand resembling a mountain or let him observe purificatory rites till death, if a man has wicked feelings and emotions he can never be purified.

gaMgAtoyena sarveNa mRdbhAraiH parvatopamaiH ॥ AmRtyorAcarecchaucaM bhAvaduSTo na zudhyati ॥ 18 ॥

तीर्थस्नानैस्तपोभिर्वा दुष्टात्मा नैव शुध्यति ॥ श्वदृतिः क्षालिता तीर्थे किं शुद्धिमधिगच्छति ॥ १९ ॥

A vicious soul is not sanctified by the waters in the pilgrim spots nor by austerities. Does the canine hide become pure when washed in a holy river?

english translation

tIrthasnAnaistapobhirvA duSTAtmA naiva zudhyati ॥ zvadRtiH kSAlitA tIrthe kiM zuddhimadhigacchati ॥ 19 ॥

अंतर्भावप्रदुष्टस्य विशतोऽपि हुताशनम् ॥ न स्वर्गो नापवर्गश्च देहनिर्दहनं परम् ॥ २०॥

Neither heaven nor salvation can be attained by a man of vicious emotion even if he immolates himself in the holy fire. The only result will be that his body is entirely burnt off.

aMtarbhAvapraduSTasya vizato'pi hutAzanam ॥ na svargo nApavargazca dehanirdahanaM param ॥ 20॥
