नारद उवाच ॥ ॥ विधे नेत्रसमुद्भूतवह्निज्वाला हरस्य सा ॥ गता कुत्र वद त्वं तच्चरित्रं शशिमौलिनः ॥ १ ॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā, please tell me “Where did the flame of fire emerging from the eye of Śiva go?” Please tell me also the further story of the moon-crested lord.
english translation
॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ ॥ यदा भस्म चकाराशु तृतीयनयनानलः ॥ शम्भोः कामं प्रजज्वाल सर्वतो विफलस्तदा ॥२॥
Brahmā said: When the fire from the third eye of Śiva reduced Kāma to ashes it began to blaze all round without burning anything.
english translation
हाहाकारो महानासीत्त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे। सर्वदेवर्षयस्तात शरणं मां ययुर्द्रुतम् ॥३॥
A huge hue and cry was raised in the three worlds consisting of the mobile and immobile creatures. Immediately the gods and sages sought refuge in me.
english translation
सर्वे निवेदयामासुस्तद्दुखं मह्यमाकुलाः ॥ सुप्रणम्य सुसंस्तुत्य करौ बद्ध्वा नतानना ॥ ४ ॥
All of them in their agitation bowed to and eulogised me with their palms joined in reverence and the heads bent down. They intimated to me their grief.
english translation
तच्छ्रुत्वाहं शिवं स्मृत्वा तद्धेतुं सुविमृश्य च ॥ गतस्तत्र विनीतात्मा त्रिलोकावनहेतवे ॥ ५ ॥
On hearing that I pondered over the reason for the same, and remembering Śiva humbly I went there in order to protect the three worlds.
