न बभूव मुनेश्चेतो विकृतं मुनिसत्तमाः ॥ भ्रष्टो बभूव तद्गर्वो महेशानुग्रहेण ह ॥ १६ ॥
O great sages, the mind of the sage (Nārada) did not waver. Only the arrogance of these fellows suffered a setback and that too by the favour of Maheśa.
english translation
na babhUva munezceto vikRtaM munisattamAH ॥ bhraSTo babhUva tadgarvo mahezAnugraheNa ha ॥ 16 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशृणुतादरतस्तत्र कारणं शौनकादयः ॥ ईश्वरानुग्रहेणात्र न प्रभावः स्मरस्य हि ॥१७॥
Please listen to the reason thereof, O Śaunaka and other sages! By the controlling power of the lord, Kāma could not exercise any influence.
english translation
zRNutAdaratastatra kAraNaM zaunakAdayaH ॥ IzvarAnugraheNAtra na prabhAvaH smarasya hi ॥17॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअत्रैव शम्भुनाऽकारि सुतपश्च स्मरारिणा ॥ अत्रैव दग्धस्तेनाशु कामो मुनितपोपहः ॥ १८ ॥
It was in this very place that Śiva, the indefatigable enemy of Kāma, had formerly performed a great penance. It was here that Kāma was reduced to ashes—Kāma who used to spoil the penances of sages.
english translation
atraiva zambhunA'kAri sutapazca smarAriNA ॥ atraiva dagdhastenAzu kAmo munitapopahaH ॥ 18 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकामजीवनहेतोर्हि रत्या संप्रार्थितैस्सुरैः ॥ सम्प्रार्थित उवाचेदं शंकरो लोकशंकरः ॥ १९ ॥
Rati wanted the resuscitation of Kāma and requested the Devas. They appealed to lord Śiva, the benefactor of the whole world who said thus: nan The second collection of verses nan.

kAmajIvanahetorhi ratyA saMprArthitaissuraiH ॥ samprArthita uvAcedaM zaMkaro lokazaMkaraH ॥ 19 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकंचित्समयमासाद्य जीविष्यति सुराः स्मरः ॥ परं त्विह स्मरोपायश्चरिष्यति न कश्चन ॥2-1-2-२०॥
O Gods, after some time Kāma will come to life again. But none of his tricks will succeed here.
english translation
kaMcitsamayamAsAdya jIviSyati surAH smaraH ॥ paraM tviha smaropAyazcariSyati na kazcana ॥2-1-2-20॥
