सूत उवाच ॥ एतस्मिन्समये विप्रा नारदो मुनिसत्तमः ॥ ब्रह्मपुत्रो विनीतात्मा तपोर्थं मन आदधे॥१॥

Sūta said: O brahmins, once Nārada the excellent sage, son of Brahmā was inclined to perform penance controlling himself very much.

english translation

sUta uvAca ॥ etasminsamaye viprA nArado munisattamaH ॥ brahmaputro vinItAtmA taporthaM mana Adadhe॥1॥

हिमशैलगुहा काचिदेका परमशोभना ॥ यत्समीपे सुरनदी सदा वहति वेगतः॥२॥

There is a very beautiful cave in the Himālaya mountain near which the celestial river flows rapidly.

english translation

himazailaguhA kAcidekA paramazobhanA ॥ yatsamIpe suranadI sadA vahati vegataH॥2॥

तत्राश्रमो महादिव्यो नानाशोभासमन्वितः ॥ तपोर्थं स ययौ तत्र नारदो दिव्यदर्शनः ॥ ३ ॥

There was a great hermitage of divine splendour which was resplendent in many ways. Nārada endowed with divine vision went there to perform the penance.

english translation

tatrAzramo mahAdivyo nAnAzobhAsamanvitaH ॥ taporthaM sa yayau tatra nArado divyadarzanaH ॥ 3 ॥

तां दृष्ट्वा मुनिशार्दूलस्तेपे स सुचिरं तपः ॥ बध्वासनं दृढं मौनी प्राणानायम्य शुद्धधीः ॥ ४ ॥

On seeing the hermitage (very convenient for penance) the leading sage performed the penance for a long time, seated firmly and steadily, keeping silent, controlling the breath and retaining the purity of the intellect.

english translation

tAM dRSTvA munizArdUlastepe sa suciraM tapaH ॥ badhvAsanaM dRDhaM maunI prANAnAyamya zuddhadhIH ॥ 4 ॥

चक्रे मुनिस्समाधिं तमहम्ब्रह्मेति यत्र ह ॥ विज्ञानं भवति ब्रह्मसाक्षात्कारकरं द्विजाः ॥५॥

O brahmins, the sage performed meditation and contemplation wherein the realisation “I am Brahman” is generated leading to the direct perception of Brahman.
