सनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ ततो हिरण्याक्षसुतः कदाचित्संश्रावितो नर्मयुतैर्मदांधैः॥ तैर्भ्रातृभिस्संप्रयुतो विहारे किमंध राज्येन तवाद्य कार्यम् ॥ १ ॥
Sanatkumāra said: Once Andhaka, the son of Hiraṇyākṣa, was addressed jokingly by his haughty cousins in the course of their sports and games : O blind fellow, what will you do with kingdom?
english translation
sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ tato hiraNyAkSasutaH kadAcitsaMzrAvito narmayutairmadAMdhaiH॥ tairbhrAtRbhissaMprayuto vihAre kimaMdha rAjyena tavAdya kAryam ॥ 1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptहिरण्यनेत्रस्तु बभूव मूढः कलिप्रियं नेत्रविहीनमेव ॥ यो लब्धवांस्त्वां विकृतं विरूपं घोरैस्तपोभिर्गिरिशं प्रसाद्य ॥ २ ॥
Hiraṇyākṣa was a fool who adopted you as son who are bereft of eyesight, fond of quarrel, ugly and hideous, after propitiating Śiva by means of severe penances.
english translation
hiraNyanetrastu babhUva mUDhaH kalipriyaM netravihInameva ॥ yo labdhavAMstvAM vikRtaM virUpaM ghoraistapobhirgirizaM prasAdya ॥ 2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस त्वं न भागी खलु राज्यकस्य किमन्यजातोऽपि लभेत राज्यम् ॥ विचार्यतां तद्भवतैव नूनं वयं तु तद्भागिन एव सत्यम् ॥ ३ ॥
You cannot lay claim to the kingdom. Can a person other than the son of a king ever aspire for the kingdom? You yourself can ponder over it. At the most we can give you some share.
english translation
sa tvaM na bhAgI khalu rAjyakasya kimanyajAto'pi labheta rAjyam ॥ vicAryatAM tadbhavataiva nUnaM vayaM tu tadbhAgina eva satyam ॥ 3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसनत्कुमार उवाच ॥ तेषां तु वाक्यानि निशम्य तानि विचार्य बुद्ध्या स्वयमेव दीनः ॥ ताञ्छांतयित्वा विविधैर्वचोभिर्गतस्त्वरण्यं निशि निर्जनं तु ॥ ४ ॥
Sanatkumāra said: On hearing their words Andhaka was distressed. He thought over the matter intelligently. He then appeased his cousins with various words. In the night he went to a desolate forest.

sanatkumAra uvAca ॥ teSAM tu vAkyAni nizamya tAni vicArya buddhyA svayameva dInaH ॥ tAJchAMtayitvA vividhairvacobhirgatastvaraNyaM nizi nirjanaM tu ॥ 4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवर्षायुतं तत्र तपश्चचार जजाप जाप्यं विधृतैकपादः ॥ आहारहीनो नियमोर्द्ध्वबाहुः कर्त्तुं न शक्यं हि सुरा सुरैर्यत् ॥ ५ ॥
For ten thousand years he performed a severe penance, repeating mantras. He stood on one leg, observed fast and lifted up his arms continuously. In short, he performed a penance that no god or Asura could do.

varSAyutaM tatra tapazcacAra jajApa jApyaM vidhRtaikapAdaH ॥ AhArahIno niyamorddhvabAhuH karttuM na zakyaM hi surA surairyat ॥ 5 ॥
