गोचरग्रहवशान्मनुजानां यच्छुभाशुभफलाम्युपलब्ध्यै । अष्टवर्ग इति यो महदुक्तस्तत्प्रसाधनमिहाभिदधेऽहम् ॥ १॥
In order to ascertain the good and bad effects caused by the several planets in their transits through the Rasis of the zodiac, the Ashtakavarga has been very highly spoken of by the great sages, and I now set forth the mode of accomplishing it.

gocaragrahavazAnmanujAnAM yacchubhAzubhaphalAmyupalabdhyai । aSTavarga iti yo mahaduktastatprasAdhanamihAbhidadhe'ham ॥ 1॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptआलिख्य सम्यग्भुवि राशिचक्रं ग्रहस्थितिं तज्जननप्रवृत्तम् । तत्तद्ग्रहर्क्षात्क्रमशोऽष्तवर्गं प्रोक्तं करोत्यक्षविधानमत्र ॥ २॥
Draw well on the ground the Rasi Chakra and post in the same in their proper places the several planets as they stood at the time of birth, Regulate the distribution of the beads in the manner directed (in the following Slokas), in the several Rasis, the reckoning in each case being made from the sign occupied by the particular planet for getting the Ashtakavarga.

With reference to his Ashtakavarga, the Sun is declared exceedingly auspicious in the 1 st, the 2 nd, the 4 th, the 7 th, the 8 th, the 9 th, the 10 th and 11 th places from himself, Mars and Saturn; in the 5 th, the 6 th, the 9 th and 11 th places from Jupiter; in the 6 th, the 7 th and the 12 th places from Venus; in the 3 rd, the 5 th, the 6 th, the 9 th, the 10 th, the 11 th and the 12 th from Mercury; in the 3 rd, the 6 th, the 10 th and the 11 th places from the Moon; and lastly, in the 3 rd, the 4 th, the 6 th, the 10 th, the 11 th and the 12 th places from the Lagna.
