In states of sadness, fainting, fear, disgust, sorrow, fatigue, dreaming, helplessness, drowsiness, inertness, and unconsciousness, hand gestures should not be used.
In states of illness, old age, fear, extreme cold, intoxication, madness, confusion, and during meditation or austerities, hand gestures should not be used.
हिमवर्षहते बद्धे वरिणाप्लवसंश्रिते । स्वप्नायिते च संभ्रान्ते नतसंस्फोटने तथा ॥ १७९॥
In situations of being struck by snow, bound, relying on water, in a dreamlike state, in confusion, or when prostrating, hand gestures should not be used.
न हस्ताभिनयः कार्यः कार्यः सत्त्वस्य संग्रहः । तथा काकुविशेषश्च नानाभवरसान्वितः ॥ १८०॥
Hand gestures should not be used when the collection of essence (sattva) is required, or when there is a special role of the crow, or in states associated with various transformations.
