Envy (asūyā) is caused by Determinants such as various offences, hatred, other people’s wealth, good luck, intelligence, sports, learning and the like. It is to be represented on the stage by Consequents such as finding fault with others, decrying their virtues, not paying any heed to these, remaining with downcast face, knitting eyebrows in disparagement, and abusing others in the assembly [of men]. On these points there are two Āryās: 36. Envy arises in a person who is displeased to see other people’s good fortune, wealth, intelligence, and exuberence of sportiveness.
