अतोद्यं सुषिरं नाम ज्ञेयं वंशगतं बुधैः । वैण एव विधिस्तत्र स्वरग्रामसमाश्रयः ॥ १ ॥
sanskrit
Therefore, the hollow (suṣira) instrument, known as the flute, made from bamboo, should be understood by the wise. The method of playing it is the same as that of the Vīṇā, following the rules of the musical scales (svaragrāma).
english translation
atodyaM suSiraM nAma jJeyaM vaMzagataM budhaiH | vaiNa eva vidhistatra svaragrAmasamAzrayaH || 1 ||

द्विकत्रिकचतुष्कास्तु ज्ञेया वंशगताः स्वराः । कम्प्यमानार्थमुक्ताश्च व्यक्तमुक्तास्तथैव च ॥ २ ॥

The notes produced by the bamboo flute are known to have two, three, and four Śrutis. They are either shaken (kampita), half-open (ardhamukta), or fully open (vyaktamukta).

तत्रोपरि यथा ह्येकः स्वरो वैणस्वरान्तरे । प्राप्नोत्यन्यत्वमेवेह तथा वंशगतोऽपि हि ॥ ३ ॥

Just as one note on the Vīṇā transforms into another, similarly, a note of the flute also changes into a different one.

द्विकस्त्रिकश्चतुष्को वा श्रुतिसङ्ख्यो भवेत् स्वरः । अनीरणात्तु शेषाणां स्वराणामपि सम्भवः । अङ्गुलीवादनकृतं तच्च मे सन्निबोधत ॥ ४ ॥

A note may consist of two, three, or four Śrutis. For the remaining notes, even though not blown (i.e., unplayed), they are still possible. Understand this, as it is created by finger placement while playing the flute.
