Therefore, the hollow (suṣira) instrument, known as the flute, made from bamboo, should be understood by the wise. The method of playing it is the same as that of the Vīṇā, following the rules of the musical scales (svaragrāma).
The notes produced by the bamboo flute are known to have two, three, and four Śrutis. They are either shaken (kampita), half-open (ardhamukta), or fully open (vyaktamukta).
A note may consist of two, three, or four Śrutis. For the remaining notes, even though not blown (i.e., unplayed), they are still possible. Understand this, as it is created by finger placement while playing the flute.
When the finger is fully removed, the note is known to consist of four Śrutis. When the finger is shaken, the note is considered to consist of three Śrutis. When the finger is partly removed, the note is said to consist of two Śrutis, based on the number of Śrutis determined by the application of fingers.
