द्वाराणि षट् चैव भवन्ति चास्य रङ्गस्य दिग्भागविनिश्चितानि । नाट्यप्रयोगेण खलु प्रवेशे प्राच्यां प्रतीच्यां च दिशि प्रवेशः ॥ ६६॥

sanskrit

There are six doors in the theater, and their locations are determined by the directions of the stage. In the performance of the play, the entrance is to be from the eastern and western directions.

dvArANi SaT caiva bhavanti cAsya raGgasya digbhAgavinizcitAni | nATyaprayogeNa khalu praveze prAcyAM pratIcyAM ca dizi pravezaH || 66||

विधानमुत्क्रम्य यथा च रङ्गे विना प्रमाणाद्विदिशः प्रयोगे । द्वारन्तु यस्मात्समृदङ्गभाण्डं प्राचीं दिशं तां मनसाऽध्यवस्येत् ॥ ६७॥

sanskrit

By following the prescribed method, the performance on the stage should be conducted without deviating from the set rules. The door, which is located at the center of the stage, should be considered as leading to the eastern direction in the mind of the performer.

vidhAnamutkramya yathA ca raGge vinA pramANAdvidizaH prayoge | dvArantu yasmAtsamRdaGgabhANDaM prAcIM dizaM tAM manasA'dhyavasyet || 67||

वयोऽनुरूपः प्रथमन्तु वेशो वेशोऽनुरूपश्च गतिप्रचारः । गतिप्रचारानुगतश्च पाठ्यं पाठ्यानुरूपाभिनयश्च कार्यः ॥ ६८॥

The costume should be suitable for the age of the character, and the movement should correspond to the nature of the character. The performance should follow the proper sequence, with the acting style adapted to the text and its requirements.

धर्मी या द्विविधा प्रोक्ता मया पूर्वं द्विजोत्तमाः । लौकिकी नाट्यधर्मी च तयोर्वक्ष्यामि लक्षणम् ॥ ६९॥

The two types of righteousness that I have previously mentioned, O best of Brahmins, are the worldly righteousness and the dramatic righteousness. I shall now describe the characteristics of these two.
