सम्प्रणष्टेन्द्रियमनाः शोकौत्सुक्योपवेशने । प्रसार्य बाहू शिथिलौ तथा श्रोपाश्रयाश्रितः ॥ २०६॥
In sitting due to grief or anxiety, when the mind and senses seem lost, the arms are to be stretched out loosely, and the body is to rest upon a support.
In cases of delusion, fainting, intoxication, fatigue, or sorrow, one should sit with all limbs contracted and gathered together between the feet and knees.
In cases of illness, shame, sleep, or meditation, a person should sit accordingly. The utkaṭikā sitting posture consists of the hips and heels being brought together.
पित्र्ये निवापे जप्ये च सन्ध्यास्वाचमनेऽपि च । विष्कम्भितं पुनश्चैवं जानुं भूमौ निपातयेत् ॥ २०९॥
In offering libations to ancestors, in muttering prayers, during twilight rituals, and in performing ācamana (sipping water ceremonially), one should sit with legs spread out, and place one knee on the ground.
प्रियाप्रसादने कार्यं होमादिकरणेषु च । महीगताभ्यां जानुभ्यामधोमुखमवस्थितम् ॥ २१०॥
In appeasing a beloved woman, in performing sacrificial acts like the homa, one should sit with both knees touching the ground and the face turned downward.
