ऋषयः संयतात्मानः फलमूलानिलाशनाः । तपसैव प्रपश्यन्ति त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् ॥ २३६ ॥

The sages who control themselves and subsist on fruit, roots, and air, survey the three worlds together with their moving and immovable (creatures) through their austerities alone.

english translation

RSayaH saMyatAtmAnaH phalamUlAnilAzanAH | tapasaiva prapazyanti trailokyaM sacarAcaram || 236 ||

अउषधान्यगदो विद्या दैवी च विविधा स्थितिः । तपसैव प्रसिध्यन्ति तपस्तेषां हि साधनम् ॥ २३७ ॥

Medicines, good health, learning, and the various divine stations are attained by austerities alone; for austerity is the means of gaining them.

english translation

auSadhAnyagado vidyA daivI ca vividhA sthitiH | tapasaiva prasidhyanti tapasteSAM hi sAdhanam || 237 ||

यद् दुस्तरं यद् दुरापं यद् दुर्गं यच्च दुष्करम् । सर्वं तु तपसा साध्यं तपो हि दुरतिक्रमम् ॥ २३८ ॥

Whatever is hard to be traversed, whatever is hard to be attained, whatever is hard to be reached, whatever is hard to be performed, all (this) may be accomplished by austerities; for austerity (possesses a power) which it is difficult to surpass.

yad dustaraM yad durApaM yad durgaM yacca duSkaram | sarvaM tu tapasA sAdhyaM tapo hi duratikramam || 238 ||

महापातकिनश्चैव शेषाश्चाकार्यकारिणः । तपसैव सुतप्तेन मुच्यन्ते किल्बिषात् ततः ॥ २३९ ॥

Both those who have committed mortal sin (Mahapataka) and all other offenders are severally freed from their guilt by means of well-performed austerities.

mahApAtakinazcaiva zeSAzcAkAryakAriNaH | tapasaiva sutaptena mucyante kilbiSAt tataH || 239 ||

कीटाश्चाहिपतङ्गाश्च पशवश्च वयांसि च । स्थावराणि च भूतानि दिवं यान्ति तपोबलात् ॥ २४० ॥

Insects, snakes, moths, bees, birds and beings, bereft of motion, reach heaven by the power of austerities.
