Manusmriti
महापातकिनश्चैव शेषाश्चाकार्यकारिणः । तपसैव सुतप्तेन मुच्यन्ते किल्बिषात् ततः ॥ २३९ ॥
Both those who have committed mortal sin (Mahapataka) and all other offenders are severally freed from their guilt by means of well-performed austerities.

mahApAtakinazcaiva zeSAzcAkAryakAriNaH । tapasaiva sutaptena mucyante kilbiSAt tataH ॥ 239 ॥
