[दरुपद] भूतानां पराणिनः शरेष्ठाः पराणिनां बुद्धिजीविनः बुद्धिमत्सु नराः शरेष्ठा नराणां तु दविजातयः ॥ ५-६-१ ॥
‘Drupada said: "Of all beings, those endowed with life are the highest. Among living beings, those endowed with intelligence are superior. Among intelligent creatures, men are preeminent. And among men, the twice-born are the noblest."’ ॥ 5-6-1 ॥

[darupada] bhUtAnAM parANinaH zareSThAH parANinAM buddhijIvinaH buddhimatsu narAH zareSThA narANAM tu davijAtayaH ॥ 5-6-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptदविजेषु वैद्याः शरेयांसॊ वैद्येषु कृतबुद्धयः स भवान कृतबुद्धीनां परधान इति मे मतिः ॥ ५-६-२ ॥
‘Of the twice-born, students of the Veda are the highest. Among these students, those endowed with cultured understanding are superior. Of cultured men, practical persons excel. And among practical men, those who know the Supreme Being are the greatest. You, it seems to me, stand at the very top of those of cultured understanding.’ ॥ 5-6-2 ॥

davijeSu vaidyAH zareyAMsò vaidyeSu kRtabuddhayaH sa bhavAna kRtabuddhInAM paradhAna iti me matiH ॥ 5-6-2 ॥

‘You, it seems to me, stand at the very top of those of cultured understanding. You are distinguished both in age and learning, and your intellect is equal to that of either Śukra or Vṛhaspati, the son of Angiras.’ ॥ 5-6-3 ॥

kulena ca viziSTò 'si vayasA ca zarutena ca parajJayAnavamaza cAsi zukreNAGgirasena ca ॥ 5-6-3 ॥

‘You know well the character of the chief of the Kuru race, and also the nature of Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti.’ ॥ 5-6-4 ॥

‘With Dhritarashtra’s knowledge, the Pandavas were deceived by their opponents. Though advised by Vidura, he still follows his son!’ ॥ 5-6-5 ॥
