‘Baladeva said, "You have all heard the words of the elder brother of Gada, marked by virtue, prudence, and wisdom, beneficial alike to Yudhishthira and King Duryodhana."’ ।। 5-2-1 ।।
[baladeva] zarutaM bhavadbhira gada pUrvajasya; vAkyaM yathA dharmavada arthavaca ca ajAtazatròza ca hitaM hitaM ca; duryòdhanasyApi tathaiva rAjJaH || 5-2-1 ||
‘These valiant sons of Kunti are willing to surrender half their kingdom, making this great sacrifice for the sake of Duryodhana. Therefore, the sons of Dhritarashtra should surrender half the kingdom and rejoice, being exceedingly happy that the quarrel can be so satisfactorily resolved.’ ।। 5-2-2 ।।
लब्ध्वा हि राज्यं पुरुषप्रवीराः; सम्यक परवृत्तेषु परेषु चैव धरुवं परशान्ताः सुखम आविशेयुस; तेषां परशान्तिश च हितं परजानाम ।। ५-२-३ ।।
‘These mighty men, having received their share, would no doubt be pacified and content, provided the opposite party acts rightly. Their pacification would contribute to the welfare of mankind.’ ।। 5-2-3 ।।
दुर्यॊधनस्यापि मतं च वेत्तुं; वक्तुं च वाक्यानि युधिष्ठिरस्य परियं मम सयाद यदि तत्र कश चिद; वरजेच छमार्थं कुरुपाण्डवानाम ।। ५-२-४ ।।
‘I would be well pleased if someone from here, with the aim of reconciling both the Kurus and the Pandavas, undertakes a journey to learn the mind of Duryodhana and convey the views of Yudhishthira.’ ।। 5-2-4 ।।
स भीष्मम आमन्त्र्य कुरुप्रवीरं; वैचित्र वीर्यं च महानुभावम दरॊणं सपुत्रं विदुरं कृपं च; गान्धारराजं च ससूतपुत्रम ।। ५-२-५ ।।
‘Let him respectfully salute Bhishma, the heroic scion of the Kuru race; the magnanimous son of Vichitravirya; Drona and his son; Vidura and Kripa; and the king of Gandhara, along with his son-in-law.’ ।। 5-2-5 ।।
