न चापि पार्थॊ विजितॊ रणे तैः; सवतेजसा धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रैः तथापि राजा सहितः सुहृद्भिर; अभीप्सते ऽनामयम एव तेषाम ।। ५-१-१६ ।।

‘The sons of Dhritarashtra are incapable of defeating Arjuna, the son of Pritha, by force. Nevertheless, King Yudhishthira and his allies desire nothing but the welfare of Dhritarashtra’s sons.’ ।। 5-1-16 ।।

english translation

na cApi pArthò vijitò raNe taiH; savatejasA dhRtarASTrasya putraiH tathApi rAjA sahitaH suhRdbhira; abhIpsate 'nAmayama eva teSAma || 5-1-16 ||

यत तत सवयं पाण्डुसुतैर विजित्य; समाहृतं भूमिपतीन निपीड्य तत परार्थयन्ते पुरुषप्रवीराः; कुन्तीसुता माद्रवतीसुतौ च ।। ५-१-१७ ।।

‘These valiant sons of Kunti, along with the two sons of Madri, seek only what they themselves won in battle from the defeated kings.’ ।। 5-1-17 ।।

yata tata savayaM pANDusutaira vijitya; samAhRtaM bhUmipatIna nipIDya tata parArthayante puruSapravIrAH; kuntIsutA mAdravatIsutau ca || 5-1-17 ||

बालास तव इमे तैर विविधौर उपायैः; संप्रार्थिता हन्तुम अमित्रसाहाः राज्यं जिहीर्षद्भिर असद्भिर उग्रैः; सर्वं च तद वॊ विदितं यथावत ।। ५-१-१८ ।।

‘Surely, you all know how the enemies of the Pandavas, eager to seize the kingdom, plotted in various ways to destroy them when they were still mere boys. Such wickedness and rancor possessed them.’ ।। 5-1-18 ।।

bAlAsa tava ime taira vividhaura upAyaiH; saMprArthitA hantuma amitrasAhAH rAjyaM jihIrSadbhira asadbhira ugraiH; sarvaM ca tada vò viditaM yathAvata || 5-1-18 ||

तेषां च लॊभं परसमीक्ष्य वृद्धं; धर्मात्मतां चापि युधिष्ठिरस्य संबन्धितां चापि समीक्ष्य तेषां; मतिं कुरुध्वं सहिताः पृथक च ।। ५-१-१९ ।।

‘Consider their greed and, in contrast, the virtue of Yudhishthira. Also, reflect upon the bond that exists between them. I beseech you all to deliberate together, and also to reflect individually.’ ।। 5-1-19 ।।

teSAM ca lòbhaM parasamIkSya vRddhaM; dharmAtmatAM cApi yudhiSThirasya saMbandhitAM cApi samIkSya teSAM; matiM kurudhvaM sahitAH pRthaka ca || 5-1-19 ||

इमे च सत्ये ऽभिरताः सदैव; तं पारयित्वा समयं यथावत अतॊ ऽनयथा तैर उपचर्यमाणा; हन्युः समेतान धृतराष्ट्र पुत्रान ।। ५-१-२० ।।

‘The Pandavas have always honored truth and have fulfilled their promises to the letter. If now wronged by the sons of Dhritarashtra, they would not hesitate to vanquish them, even if united.’ ।। 5-1-20 ।।
