जानन्न अपि महाबुद्धिः पुनर्द्यूतम अवर्तयत अप्य अयं न विनाशः सयात कुरूणाम इति चिन्तयन ॥ २-६७-१६ ॥
'Though he was highly intelligent and fully aware of the potential consequences, he proceeded with the game, as if foreseeing the impending destruction of the Kurus.' ॥ 2-67-16 ॥

युधिष्ठिर उवाच कथं वै मद्विधॊ राजा सवधर्मम अनुपालयन आहूतॊ विनिवर्तेत दीव्यामि शकुने तवया ॥ २-६७-१७ ॥
'Yudhishthira said: O Sakuni, how can a king like me, who is always devoted to his duties, refuse to participate when summoned to the game? Therefore, I will play with you.' ॥ 2-67-17 ॥

शकुनिर उवाच गवाश्वं बहुधेनूकम अपर्यन्तम अजाविकम गजाः कॊशॊ हिरण्यं च दासीदासं च सर्वशः ॥ २-६७-१८ ॥
'Sakuni replied: We have many cows and horses, countless milch cows, an unlimited number of goats and sheep, as well as elephants, treasures, gold, and both male and female servants.' ॥ 2-67-18 ॥

एष नॊ गलह एवैकॊ वनवासाय पाण्डवाः यूयं वयं वा विजिता वसेम वनम आश्रिताः ॥ २-६७-१९ ॥
'This alone is the stake for our game: either the Pandavas will go into exile in the forest, or we will, depending on who is defeated. Thus, whoever loses will live in the forest, relying on its shelter.' ॥ 2-67-19 ॥

अनेन वयवसायेन दीव्याम भरतर्षभ समुत्क्षेपेण चैकेन वनवासाय भारत ॥ २-६७-२० ॥
'With this determination, let us play, O bull among the Bharatas. With a single throw, O Bharata, for exile to the forest.' ॥ 2-67-20 ॥
