यॊ हि परश्नं न विब्रूयाद धर्मदर्षी सभां गतः अनृते या फलावाप्तिस तस्याः सॊ ऽरधं समश्नुते ।। २-६१-५६ ।।

sanskrit

'You should also respond according to your judgment. One who, understanding the principles of morality and being present in the assembly, fails to answer a question, incurs half the demerit of a falsehood.' ।। 2-61-56 ।।

english translation

yò hi paraznaM na vibrUyAda dharmadarSI sabhAM gataH anRte yA phalAvAptisa tasyAH sò 'radhaM samaznute || 2-61-56 ||

यः पुनर वितथं बरूयाद धर्मदर्शी सभां गतः अनृतस्य फलं कृत्स्नं संप्राप्नॊतीति निश्चयः ।। २-६१-५७ ।।

sanskrit

'However, he who, knowing the rules of morality and being present in the assembly, answers falsely, certainly incurs the full sin of lying.' ।। 2-61-57 ।।

english translation

yaH punara vitathaM barUyAda dharmadarzI sabhAM gataH anRtasya phalaM kRtsnaM saMprApnòtIti nizcayaH || 2-61-57 ||

अत्राप्य उदाहरन्तीमम इतिहासं पुरातनम परह्लादस्य च संवादं मुनेर आङ्गिरसस्य च ।। २-६१-५८ ।।

'The learned refer to the ancient tale of Prahlada and the son of Angirasa as a pertinent example.' ।। 2-61-58 ।।

english translation

atrApya udAharantImama itihAsaM purAtanama parahlAdasya ca saMvAdaM munera AGgirasasya ca || 2-61-58 ||

'Prahlada, the lord of the Daityas, had a son named Virochana. For the sake of a daughter, he attacked the self-controlled Angirasa.' ।। 2-61-59 ।।

'We have heard that they both wagered their lives, each declaring, 'I am superior!'—all for the sake of winning the bride.' ।। 2-61-60 ।।
