यद इदं दरौपदी वाक्यम उक्तवत्य असकृच छुभा विमृश्य कस्य कः पक्षः पार्थिवा वदतॊत्तरम ॥ २-६१-१६ ॥

'O kings, answer the question posed by this noble daughter of King Drupada. After careful consideration, declare which side each of you supports.' ॥ 2-61-16 ॥

english translation

yada idaM daraupadI vAkyama uktavatya asakRca chubhA vimRzya kasya kaH pakSaH pArthivA vadatòttarama ॥ 2-61-16 ॥

एवं स बहुशः सर्वान उक्तवांस तान सभा सदः न च ते पृथिवीपालास तम ऊचुः साध्व असाधु वा ॥ २-६१-१७ ॥

'Thus did Vikarna repeatedly appeal to those that were in that assembly. But those kings answered him not one word, good or ill.' ॥ 2-61-17 ॥

english translation

evaM sa bahuzaH sarvAna uktavAMsa tAna sabhA sadaH na ca te pRthivIpAlAsa tama UcuH sAdhva asAdhu vA ॥ 2-61-17 ॥

उक्त्वा तथासकृत सर्वान विकर्णः पृथिवीपतीन पाणिं पाणौ विनिष्पिष्य निःश्वसन्न इदम अब्रवीत ॥ २-६१-१८ ॥

'After repeatedly speaking to all the kings, Vikarna placed his hand on his head, sighed deeply, and then spoke the following words:' ॥ 2-61-18 ॥

uktvA tathAsakRta sarvAna vikarNaH pRthivIpatIna pANiM pANau viniSpiSya niHzvasanna idama abravIta ॥ 2-61-18 ॥

विब्रूत पृथिवीपाला वाक्यं मा वा कथं चन मन्ये नयाय्यं यद अत्राहं तद धि वक्ष्यामि कौरवाः ॥ २-६१-१९ ॥

'O kings of the earth and Kauravas, whether you choose to answer this question or not, I will declare what I consider to be just and proper.' ॥ 2-61-19 ॥

vibrUta pRthivIpAlA vAkyaM mA vA kathaM cana manye nayAyyaM yada atrAhaM tada dhi vakSyAmi kauravAH ॥ 2-61-19 ॥

चत्वार्य आहुर नरश्रेष्ठा वयसनानि महीक्षिताम मृगयां पानम अक्षांश च गराम्ये चैवातिसक्तताम ॥ २-६१-२० ॥

'It has been said that hunting, drinking, gambling, and excessive indulgence in women are the four vices of kings.' ॥ 2-61-20 ॥
