परकालयेद दिशः सर्वाः परतॊदेनेव सारथिः परत्य अमित्रश्रियं दीप्तां बुभूषुर भरतर्षभ ।। २-५०-१६ ।।

sanskrit

'One who aims to seize the dazzling fortune of his adversary should, O foremost of the Bharatas, control every aspect of his domain as a charioteer commands his horses with a whip.' ।। 2-50-16 ।।

english translation

parakAlayeda dizaH sarvAH paratòdeneva sArathiH paratya amitrazriyaM dIptAM bubhUSura bharatarSabha || 2-50-16 ||

hk transliteration

परच्छन्नॊ वा परकाशॊ वा यॊ यॊगॊ रिपुबान्धनः तद वै शस्त्रं शस्त्रविदां न शस्त्रं छेदनं समृतम ।। २-५०-१७ ।।

sanskrit

'Experts in weaponry assert that a weapon is not merely a tool for cutting, but a means, whether concealed or visible, to vanquish an enemy.' ।। 2-50-17 ।।

english translation

paracchannò vA parakAzò vA yò yògò ripubAndhanaH tada vai zastraM zastravidAM na zastraM chedanaM samRtama || 2-50-17 ||

hk transliteration

असंतॊषः शरियॊ मूलं तस्मात तं कामयाम्य अहम समुच्छ्रये यॊ यतते स राजन परमॊ नयी ।। २-५०-१८ ।।

sanskrit

'Whether one is considered a foe or a friend does not depend on their appearance or stature. A person who causes pain to another is seen as an enemy by the one who suffers. Discontent is the seed of success.' ।। 2-50-18 ।।

english translation

asaMtòSaH zariyò mUlaM tasmAta taM kAmayAmya ahama samucchraye yò yatate sa rAjana paramò nayI || 2-50-18 ||

hk transliteration

मम तवं हि न कर्तव्यम ऐश्वर्ये वा धने ऽपि वा पूर्वावाप्तं हरन्त्य अन्ये राजधर्मं हि तं विदुः ।। २-५०-१९ ।।

sanskrit

'Therefore, O king, I embrace discontent. A person who strives for prosperity is truly wise in matters of state. One should not cling to wealth and affluence, for the riches accumulated and hoarded can easily be taken away.' ।। 2-50-19 ।।

english translation

mama tavaM hi na kartavyama aizvarye vA dhane 'pi vA pUrvAvAptaM harantya anye rAjadharmaM hi taM viduH || 2-50-19 ||

hk transliteration

अद्रॊहे समयं कृत्वा चिच्छेद नमुचेः शिरः शक्रः सा हि मता तस्य रिपौ वृत्तिः सनातनी ।। २-५०-२० ।।

sanskrit

'Such are the practices of kings. Sakra severed Namuchi’s head during a time of peace, despite having sworn otherwise, because he deemed this approach to dealing with enemies to be an eternal principle.' ।। 2-50-20 ।।

english translation

adròhe samayaM kRtvA ciccheda namuceH ziraH zakraH sA hi matA tasya ripau vRttiH sanAtanI || 2-50-20 ||
