[भ] चेदिराजकुले जातस तर्यक्ष एष चतुर्भुजः रासभाराव सदृशं रुराव च ननाद च ॥ २-४०-१ ॥

'Bhishma said, "This Shishupala, born into the lineage of the Chedi king, had three eyes and four arms. From the moment of his birth, he cried out and brayed like a donkey."' ॥ 2-40-1 ॥

english translation

[bha] cedirAjakule jAtasa taryakSa eSa caturbhujaH rAsabhArAva sadRzaM rurAva ca nanAda ca ॥ 2-40-1 ॥

तेनास्य माता पितरौ तरेसतुस तौ स बान्धवौ वैकृतं तच च तौ दृष्ट्वा तयागाय कुरुतां मतिम ॥ २-४०-२ ॥

'Consequently, his father, mother, and relatives were filled with fear. Observing these ominous signs, they decided to abandon him.' ॥ 2-40-2 ॥

tenAsya mAtA pitarau taresatusa tau sa bAndhavau vaikRtaM taca ca tau dRSTvA tayAgAya kurutAM matima ॥ 2-40-2 ॥

ततः सभार्यं नृपतिं सामात्यं सपुरॊहितम चिन्ता संमूढहृदयं वाग उवाचाशरीरिणी ॥ २-४०-३ ॥

'At that moment, an incorporeal voice spoke to the king, his wife, and their ministers and priests, all of whom were paralyzed by anxiety, with these words:' ॥ 2-40-3 ॥

tataH sabhAryaM nRpatiM sAmAtyaM sapuròhitama cintA saMmUDhahRdayaM vAga uvAcAzarIriNI ॥ 2-40-3 ॥

एष ते नृपते पुत्रः शरीमाञ जातॊ महाबलः तस्माद अस्मान न भेतव्यम अव्यग्रः पाहि वै शिशुम ॥ २-४०-४ ॥

'This son of yours, O king, will be both fortunate and exceptionally strong. Therefore, you need not fear him. Indeed, care for the child without anxiety.' ॥ 2-40-4 ॥

eSa te nRpate putraH zarImAJa jAtò mahAbalaH tasmAda asmAna na bhetavyama avyagraH pAhi vai zizuma ॥ 2-40-4 ॥

न चैवैतस्य मृत्युस तवं न कालः परत्युपस्थितः मृत्युर हन्तास्य शस्त्रेण स चॊत्पन्नॊ नराधिप ॥ २-४०-५ ॥

'He will not die in childhood, for his time has not yet come. The one destined to kill him with weapons has also been born.' ॥ 2-40-5 ॥

na caivaitasya mRtyusa tavaM na kAlaH paratyupasthitaH mRtyura hantAsya zastreNa sa còtpannò narAdhipa ॥ 2-40-5 ॥
