गम्यते यदि मृगेन्द्रमन्दिरं लभ्यते करिकपालमौक्तिकम् । जम्बुकालयगते च प्राप्यते वत्सपुच्छखरचर्मखण्डनम् ॥१८II
If you go to the lion's cave you may find the gem from the elephant's forehead, but if you go to where the fox lives you will find nothing but the tail of a calf or the bone of a donkey.

Life without knowledge is meaningless like a dog's tail. A dog's tail neither covers its dignity nor can it drive away other creatures like flies etc. In the same way, a foolish man can neither hide a secret nor make the attacks of his enemies ineffective.

विद्या बिना जीवन कुत्ते की पूँछ की व्यर्थ है। कुत्ते की पूँछ न तो उसकी इज्जत ही ढकती है और ना ही मक्खी आदि अन्य जीवों को उड़ा सकती है। उसी प्रकार मुर्ख पुरुष न तो गुप्त बात को छिपा सकता है और न ही शत्रुओं के आक्रमण को व्यर्थ कर सकता है।
