यत्शक्रशुक्र वागीशकपिष्ठलगरुत्मताम् । मतेभ्यः प्राह ऋषभो भागुरेर्देवलस्य च ॥ ८६-०१ ॥

Ṛṣabha has written a treatise on omens (śākuna) embodying the views of the Devas, Śukra. Indra, Bṛhaspati, Kapiṣṭhala and Garuḍa and of the Ṛṣis—Bhaguri, Devala and others.

भारद्वाजमतं दृष्ट्वा यच्च श्रीद्रव्यवर्धनः । आवन्तिकः प्राह नृपो महाराजाधिराजकः ॥ ८६-०२ ॥

Śrīdravyavardhana, the Mahārāja of Avanti (Ujjain) has written a treatise on omens embodying the views of Bhāradvāja.

सप्तर्षीणां मतं यच्च संस्कृतं प्राकृतं च यत् । यानि चौक्तानि गर्गऽद्यैर्यात्राकारैश्च भूरिभिः ॥ ८६-०३ ॥

There are also treatises on omens by the seven Ṛṣis; numerous treatises are also found on the subject written in ancient and modem languages. Then there are the treatises of Garga and others who have written works on Saṃhitā.

तानि दृष्ट्वा चकारैमं सर्वशाकुनसंग्रहम् । वराहमिहिरः प्रीत्या शिष्याणां ज्ञानं उत्तमम् ॥ ८६-०४ ॥

Having examined all the above treatises, I proceed to write clearly this brief treatise on omens for the enlightenment of my pupils.

अन्यजन्मान्तरकृतं कर्म पुंसां शुभाशुभम् । यत्तस्य शकुनः पाकं निवेदयति गच्छताम् ॥ ८६-०५ ॥

Omens (śākuna) indicate to travellers the good or evil effects of their karma (deeds) in a former birth.
