युक्तेन चूर्णेन करोति रागं रागक्षयं पूगफलातिरिक्तम् । चूर्णाधिकं वक्त्रविगन्धकारि पत्राधिकं साधु करोति गन्धम् ॥ ७७-३६ ॥

A due admixture of lime reddens the lips. If the nut exceed its measure it will bring down the colour; if the lime exceed its measure, the mouth will smell ill and if the leaves exceed their measure the mouth will be of good smell.

पत्राधिकं निशि हितं सफलं दिवा च प्रोक्तान्यथाकरणं अस्य विडम्बनैव । कक्कोलपूगलवलीफलपारिजातैर् आमोदितं मदमुदा मुदितं करोति ॥ ७७-३७ ॥

If the leaves exceed their measure at night or the nut exceed its measure by day the effect will be good; if the case be otherwise, the Tāmbūla will not be found sweet. If the Ṭāmbūla contain as its ingredients Kakkola, Arecanut, Lavalīphala and Pārijāta, it will exhilarate the spirit and excite sexual passion.
