वञ्जुलो नक्तमालश्च तिलकः पनसस्तथा । तिमिरो अम्रातकश्चैति षोडशानूपजाः स्मृताः ॥ ५५-११ ॥

Vanjula naktamala tilaka and panasa The sixteen sons of Nūpa were named Timira and Amrātaka.

english translation

vaJjulo naktamAlazca tilakaH panasastathA । timiro amrAtakazcaiti SoDazAnUpajAH smRtAH ॥ 55-11 ॥

उत्तमं विंशतिर्हस्ता मध्यमं षोडशान्तरम् । स्थानात्स्थानान्तरं कार्यं वृक्षाणां द्वादशावरम् ॥ ५५-१२ ॥

An interval of twenty cubits between trees is the best; one of sixteen is passable; and one of twelve is injurious.

english translation

uttamaM viMzatirhastA madhyamaM SoDazAntaram । sthAnAtsthAnAntaraM kAryaM vRkSANAM dvAdazAvaram ॥ 55-12 ॥

अभ्यासजातास्तरवः सम्स्पृशन्तः परस्परम् । मिश्रैर्मूलैश्च न फलं सम्यग्यच्छन्ति पीडिताः ॥ ५५-१३ ॥

The trees that are planted very near to each other get their branches as well as their roots interwoven and such trees get choked and do not grow well.

english translation

abhyAsajAtAstaravaH samspRzantaH parasparam । mizrairmUlaizca na phalaM samyagyacchanti pIDitAH ॥ 55-13 ॥

शीतवातऽतपै रोगो जायते पाण्डुपत्रता । अवृद्धिश्च प्रवालानां शाखाशोषो रसस्रुतिः ॥ ५५-१४ ॥

Cold winds and hot sun produce diseases in trees, and the trees turn white and do not put forth new leaves; the branches become dry and the juice oozes out.

english translation

zItavAta'tapai rogo jAyate pANDupatratA । avRddhizca pravAlAnAM zAkhAzoSo rasasrutiH ॥ 55-14 ॥

चिकित्सितं अथएतेषां शस्त्रेणऽदौ विशोधनम् । विडङ्गघृतपङ्काक्तान्सेचयेत्क्षीरवारिणा ॥ ५५-१५ ॥

To cure the tree of these diseases, first scrape off or otherwise remove the parts dead from the tree with a knife; rub over the parts a mixture of Viḍaṅga, ghee and mire and pour water mixed with milk at the roots.

cikitsitaM athaeteSAM zastreNa'dau vizodhanam । viDaGgaghRtapaGkAktAnsecayetkSIravAriNA ॥ 55-15 ॥
