वास्तुज्ञानं अथातः कमलभवान्मुनिपरं परायातम् । क्रियते अधुना मयाइदं विदग्धसांवत्सरप्रीत्यै ॥ ५३-०१ ॥

We shall now proceed to treat of the science of house-building (vāstu-vidyā). which has come down to us from the Ṛṣis who obtained it from Brahmā, for the pleasure of learned Jyotiṣakas.

vAstujJAnaM athAtaH kamalabhavAnmuniparaM parAyAtam । kriyate adhunA mayAidaM vidagdhasAMvatsaraprItyai ॥ 53-01 ॥

किं अपि किल भूतं अभवद्रुन्धानं रोदसी शरीरेण । तदमरगणेन सहसा विनिगृह्याधोमुखं न्यस्तम् ॥ ५३-०२ ॥

At one lime, a monster appeared with a body so vast as to conceal the Earth and the sky. The Devas then caught hold of parts of his body and forcibly laid him down with his face towards the ground.

kiM api kila bhUtaM abhavadrundhAnaM rodasI zarIreNa । tadamaragaNena sahasA vinigRhyAdhomukhaM nyastam ॥ 53-02 ॥

यत्र च येन गृहीतं विबुधेनाधिष्ठितः स तत्रएव । तदमरमयं विधाता वास्तुनरं कल्पयां आस ॥ ५३-०३ ॥

The several Devas now preside over the several parts of the body held by them. The monster, therefore, known as Vāstupuruṣa, represents in his body all the Devas by order of Brahmā.

yatra ca yena gRhItaM vibudhenAdhiSThitaH sa tatraeva । tadamaramayaM vidhAtA vAstunaraM kalpayAM Asa ॥ 53-03 ॥

उत्तमं अष्टाभ्यधिकं हस्तशतं नृपगृहं पृथुत्वेन । अष्टाष्टऊनान्येवं पञ्च सपादानि दैर्घ्येण ॥ ५३-०४ ॥

The king’s house shall be one of five sorts. The breadth of the superior house shall be 108 cubits, and that of each of the four inferior houses shall be 8 cubits less than the next preceding one. The length of each house shall be one-quarter as much more as its breadth.

uttamaM aSTAbhyadhikaM hastazataM nRpagRhaM pRthutvena । aSTASTaUnAnyevaM paJca sapAdAni dairghyeNa ॥ 53-04 ॥

षड्भिः षड्भिर्हीना सेनापतिसद्मनां चतुःषष्टिः । एवं पञ्च गृहाणि षड्भागसमन्विता दैर्घ्यम् ॥ ५३-०५ ॥

The commander’s house shall be one of five sorts. The breadth of the superior house shall be 64 cubits, and that of each of the four inferior houses shall be 6 cubits less than the next preceding one. The length of each house shall be one-sixth as much more as its breadth.

SaDbhiH SaDbhirhInA senApatisadmanAM catuHSaSTiH । evaM paJca gRhANi SaDbhAgasamanvitA dairghyam ॥ 53-05 ॥
