Brihat Samhita
पञ्चग्रहसंयोगान्न किल ग्रहणस्य सम्भवो भवति । तैलं च जले अष्टम्यां न विचिन्त्यं इदं विपश्चिद्भिः ॥ ५-१७ ॥
It is wrong to say that there can be no eclipse unless five planets are in conjunction and it is equally wrong to suppose that on the previous Aṣṭamī (eighth lunar) day, the coming eclipse and its properties can be ascertained by examining the appearance of a drop of oil on the surface of water.

paJcagrahasaMyogAnna kila grahaNasya sambhavo bhavati । tailaM ca jale aSTamyAM na vicintyaM idaM vipazcidbhiH ॥ 5-17 ॥
