अविदित्वाएव यत् शास्त्रं दैवज्ञत्वं प्रपद्यते । स पङ्क्तिदूषकः पापो ज्ञेयो नक्षत्रसूचकः ॥ २-१६ ॥

A pretentious Jyotiṣaka whose knowledge of the science has been picked up from what has occasionally fallen on his ears ought not to be consulted.

english translation

aviditvAeva yat zAstraM daivajJatvaM prapadyate । sa paGktidUSakaH pApo jJeyo nakSatrasUcakaH ॥ 2-16 ॥

नगरद्वारलोष्टस्य यद्वत्स्यादुपयाचितम् । आदेशस्तद्वदज्ञानां यः सत्यः स विभाव्यते ॥ २-१७ ॥

To question an ignorant man is not unlike begging of a clod of earth at the gate of a city for a gift: whatever is truth will finally triumph.

english translation

nagaradvAraloSTasya yadvatsyAdupayAcitam । AdezastadvadajJAnAM yaH satyaH sa vibhAvyate ॥ 2-17 ॥

सम्पत्त्या योजितऽदेशस्तद्विच्छिन्नकथाप्रियः । मत्तः शास्त्रएकदेशेन त्याज्यस्तादृग्महीक्षिता ॥ २-१८ ॥

One that, after the occurrence of an event, pretends that his prediction already meant so much, and one that wanders away from the subject as well as the person who is proud, having only an imperfect knowledge of the subject shall be rejected by a prince.

sampattyA yojita'dezastadvicchinnakathApriyaH । mattaH zAstraekadezena tyAjyastAdRgmahIkSitA ॥ 2-18 ॥

यस्तु सम्यग्विजानाति होरागणितसंहिताः । अभ्यर्च्यः स नरेन्द्रेण स्वीकर्तव्यो जयएषिणा ॥ २-१९ ॥

He, who well knows the Horā, the Gaṇita and the Saṃhitā śāstras, ought to be respected by the prince who loves victory and admitted into his court.

english translation

yastu samyagvijAnAti horAgaNitasaMhitAH । abhyarcyaH sa narendreNa svIkartavyo jayaeSiNA ॥ 2-19 ॥

न तत्सहस्रं करिणां वाजिनां च चतुर्गुणम् । करोति देशकालज्ञो यथाएको दैवचिन्तकः ॥ २-२० ॥

That service, which a single Jyotiṣaka, having a knowledge of place and time can render to a prince, cannot be rendered to him by a thousand elephants or by four thousand horses.

na tatsahasraM kariNAM vAjinAM ca caturguNam । karoti dezakAlajJo yathAeko daivacintakaH ॥ 2-20 ॥
