न प्रतिबद्धं गमयति वक्ति न च प्रश्नं एकं अपि पृष्टः । निगदति न च शिष्येभ्यः स कथं शास्त्रार्थविज्ज्ञेयः ॥ २-०१ ॥

He does not explain what has not been properly understood; even when asked, he does not answer a single question. He does not teach his students — how then can he be regarded as one who knows the meaning of the scriptures?

english translation

na pratibaddhaM gamayati vakti na ca praznaM ekaM api pRSTaH । nigadati na ca ziSyebhyaH sa kathaM zAstrArthavijjJeyaH ॥ 2-01 ॥

ग्रन्थो अन्यथा अर्थं करणं यश्चान्यथा करोत्यबुधः । स पितामहं उपगम्य स्तौति नरो वैशिकेनऽर्याम् ॥ २-०२ ॥

An ignorant person who interprets a text in a wrong manner, and distorts its true meaning — he goes before the Grandfather (Brahmā) and praises a courtesan in the Āryā metre.

english translation

grantho anyathA arthaM karaNaM yazcAnyathA karotyabudhaH । sa pitAmahaM upagamya stauti naro vaizikena'ryAm ॥ 2-02 ॥

तन्त्रे सुपरिज्ञाते लग्ने छायाअम्बुयन्त्रसंविदिते । होराअर्थे च सुरूढे नऽदेष्टुर्भारती वन्ध्या ॥ २-०३ ॥

When the Tantras are well understood, when the ascendant (lagna) is known through shadow-instruments and water-clocks, and when one is firmly established in the knowledge of horā (astrology), then the speech of the instructor is not barren.

tantre suparijJAte lagne chAyAambuyantrasaMvidite । horAarthe ca surUDhe na'deSTurbhAratI vandhyA ॥ 2-03 ॥

अप्यर्णवस्य पुरुषः प्रतरन्कदा चिद् आसादयेदनिलवेगवशेन पारम् । न त्वस्य कालपुरुषऽख्यमहाअर्णवस्य गच्छेत्कदा चिदनृषिर्मनसाअपि पारम् ॥ २-०४ ॥

A man, perhaps at some time, while crossing the ocean, may reach the farther shore carried by the force of the wind. But of this great ocean called the Kālapuruṣa (Cosmic Time), even a non-sage cannot ever reach the far shore — not even in his mind.

english translation

apyarNavasya puruSaH pratarankadA cid AsAdayedanilavegavazena pAram । na tvasya kAlapuruSa'khyamahAarNavasya gacchetkadA cidanRSirmanasAapi pAram ॥ 2-04 ॥

जगति प्रसारितं इवऽलिखितं इव मतौ निषिक्तं इव हृदये । शास्त्रं यस्य सभगणं नऽदेशा निष्फलास् तस्य ॥ २-०५ ॥

The one for whom the science (śāstra) is spread out through the world, as though written clearly, as though firmly impressed in the intellect, as though poured into the heart — for him, along with its divisions (or limbs), the directions of instruction are not fruitless.

english translation

jagati prasAritaM iva'likhitaM iva matau niSiktaM iva hRdaye । zAstraM yasya sabhagaNaM na'dezA niSphalAs tasya ॥ 2-05 ॥
