आदौ जन्माङ्गतो विप्र रिष्टाऽरिष्टं विचारयेत्। ततस्तन्वादिभावानां जातकस्य फलं वदेत्॥ १॥
O Brahmin, first of all estimate the evils and checking factors thereof through Lagn and then declare the effects of the 12 Bhavas.

Adau janmAGgato vipra riSTA'riSTaM vicArayet। tatastanvAdibhAvAnAM jAtakasya phalaM vadet॥ 1॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptचतुर्विंशतिवर्षाणि यावद् गच्छन्ति जन्मतः। जन्मारिष्टं तु तावत् स्यादायुर्दायुं न चिन्तयेत्॥ २॥
Evils, causing premature end, exist up to the 24th year of one‟s age. As such, no definite calculation of life span should be made till such year of age.

caturviMzativarSANi yAvad gacchanti janmataH। janmAriSTaM tu tAvat syAdAyurdAyuM na cintayet॥ 2॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptषष्ठाष्टरिष्फगश्चन्द्रः क्रूरौः खेटैश्च वीक्षितः। जातस्य मृत्युदः सद्यस्त्वष्टर्षैः शुभक्षितः॥ ३॥
Short-life Combinations (up to Sloka 23). Should Candr be in Ari, Randhr, or Vyaya Bhava and receives a Drishti from a malefic, the child will die soon. If in the process there be a Drishti from a benefic, it may live up to 8.

SaSThASTariSphagazcandraH krUrauH kheTaizca vIkSitaH। jAtasya mRtyudaH sadyastvaSTarSaiH zubhakSitaH॥ 3॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशशिवन्मृत्युदाः सौम्याश्चेद्वक्राः क्रूरवीक्षिताः। शिशोर्जातस्य मासेन लग्ने सौम्यविवर्जिते॥ ४॥
If a benefic is retrograde in Ari, Randhr, or Vyaya Bhava, receiving a Drishti from a malefic, death will occur within a month of birth.

zazivanmRtyudAH saumyAzcedvakrAH krUravIkSitAH। zizorjAtasya mAsena lagne saumyavivarjite॥ 4॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयस्य जन्मनि धीस्थाः स्युः सूर्यार्कीन्दुकुजाभधाः। तस्य त्वाशु जनित्री च भ्राता च निधनं व्रजेत्॥ ५॥
This is true, only when Lagn is not occupied by a benefic. Should Putr Bhava be occupied by Śani, Mangal and Sūrya jointly, (early) death of mother and brother will come to pass.
