नासतो विद्यते भावो नाभावो विद्यते सतः । उभयोरपि दृष्टोऽन्तस्त्वनयोस्तत्त्वदर्शिभिः ॥ २-१६ ॥
The unreal hath no being; there is non-being of the real; the truth about both has been seen by the knowers of the Truth (or the seers of the Essence).
english translation
असत् (परिवर्तनशील) वस्तु का तो अस्तित्व नहीं है और सत् (परमात्मतत्व, सर्वव्यापी और नित्य) का कभी अभाव नहीं है। इस प्रकार इन दोनों का ही तत्त्व, तत्त्वदर्शी ज्ञानी पुरुषों के द्वारा देखा गया है।

nAsato vidyate bhAvo nAbhAvo vidyate sataH । ubhayorapi dRSTo'ntastvanayostattvadarzibhiH ॥ 2-16 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअविनाशि तु तद्विद्धि येन सर्वमिदं ततम् । विनाशमव्ययस्यास्य न कश्चित्कर्तुमर्हति ॥ २-१७ ॥
Know that to be indestructible, by Which all this is pervaded. None can cause the destruction of That, the Imperishable.

उस वस्तु को तुम अविनाशी जानों, जिससे यह सम्पूर्ण जगत् व्याप्त है। इस अव्यय का नाश करने में कोई भी समर्थ नहीं है॥

avinAzi tu tadviddhi yena sarvamidaM tatam । vinAzamavyayasyAsya na kazcitkartumarhati ॥ 2-17 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअन्तवन्त इमे देहा नित्यस्योक्ताः शरीरिणः । अनाशिनोऽप्रमेयस्य तस्माद्युध्यस्व भारत ॥ २-१८ ॥
These bodies of the embodied Self, Which is eternal, indestructible and immeasurable, are said to have an end. Therefore fight, O Arjuna.
english translation
इस नाशरहित अप्रमेय नित्य देही आत्मा के ये सब शरीर नाशवान् कहे गये हैं। इसलिये हे भारत ! तुम युद्ध करो।
hindi translation
antavanta ime dehA nityasyoktAH zarIriNaH । anAzino'prameyasya tasmAdyudhyasva bhArata ॥ 2-18 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptय एनं वेत्ति हन्तारं यश्चैनं मन्यते हतम् । उभौ तौ न विजानीतो नायं हन्ति न हन्यते ॥ २-१९ ॥
He who deems It (the self) a slayer, and he who thinks of It as slain - both are ignorant. For, the self neither slays nor is slain.
english translation
जो इस आत्मा को मारने वाला समझता है और जो इसको मरा समझता है वे दोनों ही नहीं जानते हैं, क्योंकि यह आत्मा न मरता है और न मारा जाता है।

ya enaM vetti hantAraM yazcainaM manyate hatam । ubhau tau na vijAnIto nAyaM hanti na hanyate ॥ 2-19 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptन जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन् नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः । अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे ॥ २-२० ॥
It (the self) is never born; It never dies; having come into being once, It never ceases to be. Unborn, eternal, abiding and primeval, It is not slain when the body is slain.
english translation
यह आत्मा किसी काल में भी न जन्मता है और न मरता है और न यह एक बार होकर फिर अभावरूप होने वाला है। यह आत्मा अजन्मा, नित्य, शाश्वत और पुरातन है, शरीर के नाश होने पर भी इसका नाश नहीं होता।

na jAyate mriyate vA kadAcin nAyaM bhUtvA bhavitA vA na bhUyaH । ajo nityaH zAzvato'yaM purANo na hanyate hanyamAne zarIre ॥ 2-20 ॥
