शिशिराद्यास्त्रिभिस्तैस्तु विद्यादयनमुत्तरम् । आदानं च तदादत्ते नृणां प्रतिदिनं बलम् ॥ २ ॥
Uttarayan and Aadan Kaal- The six months that occur in the three seasons namely winter, spring and summer are called 'Uttarayan'; its other name is- 'Aadan Kaal'. Because during these days, this Kaal by its nature keeps taking away the strength of the living beings daily, i.e. keeps kidnapping their strength.

उत्तरायण तथा आदानकाल- शिशिर, वसन्त तथा ग्रीष्म नामक तीन ऋतुओं में होने वाले छः मासों का नाम 'उत्तरायण' है; इसी का दूसरा नाम है—'आदानकाल' । क्योंकि इन दिनों में यह काल अपनी प्रकृति से प्रतिदिन प्राणियों के बल को लेता रहता है अर्थात् उनके बल का अपहरण करता रहता है ।
