काम द्वेष हर्ष दैन्य व्यवसाय भय द्वन्द्व विपर्यासम् इङ्गित आकाराभ्यां हि मन्त्र संवरण अर्थम् आचरति प्राज्ञः ॥

By way of collecting his wandering thoughts into a resolve, the king exhibits in his appearance and movements his inclination, anger, pleasure, sorrow, determination, fear, and change in the pairs of opposite feelings.

kAma dveSa harSa dainya vyavasAya bhaya dvandva viparyAsam iGgita AkArAbhyAM hi mantra saMvaraNa artham Acarati prAjJaH ॥

दर्शने प्रसीदति, वाक्यं प्रतिगृह्णाति, आसनं ददाति, विविक्तो दर्शयते, शङ्का स्थाने न अतिशङ्कते, कथायां रमते, परिज्ञाप्येष्व् अवेक्षते, पथ्यम् उक्तं सहते, स्मयमानो नियुङ्क्ते, हस्तेन स्पृशति, श्लाघ्ये न उपहसति, परोक्षं गुणं ब्रवीति, भक्ष्येषु स्मरति, सह विहारं याति, व्यसने अभ्युपपद्यते, तद् भक्तीन् पूजयति, गुह्यम् आचष्टे, मानं वर्धयति, अर्थं करोति, अनर्थं प्रतिहन्ति इति तुष्ट ज्ञानम् ॥

"By cognising wisdom in others, he is pleased; he attends to the speech of others; he gives a seat; allows himself to be seen in private; does not suspect in places of suspicion; takes delight in conversation; spontaneously looks to things without being reminded; tolerates what is said agreeably to reason; orders with smiling face; touches with the hand; does not laugh at what is commendable; commends the qualities of another behind him; remembers (the courtier) while taking luncheon; engages himself in sports accompanied by (the courtier); consults (the courtier) when in trouble; honours the followers of the courtier; reveals the secret; honours the courtier more and more; gives him wealth; and averts his troubles;--these are the signs of the king's satisfaction (with the courtier)."

darzane prasIdati, vAkyaM pratigRhNAti, AsanaM dadAti, vivikto darzayate, zaGkA sthAne na atizaGkate, kathAyAM ramate, parijJApyeSv avekSate, pathyam uktaM sahate, smayamAno niyuGkte, hastena spRzati, zlAghye na upahasati, parokSaM guNaM bravIti, bhakSyeSu smarati, saha vihAraM yAti, vyasane abhyupapadyate, tad bhaktIn pUjayati, guhyam AcaSTe, mAnaM vardhayati, arthaM karoti, anarthaM pratihanti iti tuSTa jJAnam ॥

एतद् एव विपरीतम् अतुष्टस्य, भूयश् च वक्ष्यामः ॥

संदर्शने कोपः, वाक्यस्य अश्रवण प्रतिषेधौ, आसन चक्षुषोर् अदानम्, वर्ण स्वर भेदः, एक अक्षि भ्रुकुट्य् ओष्ठ निर्भोगः, स्वेद श्वास स्मितानाम् अस्थान उत्पत्तिः, पर मन्त्रणम्, अकस्माद् व्रजनम्, वर्धनम् अन्यस्य, भूमि गात्र विलेखनम्, अन्यस्य उपतोदनम्, विद्या वर्ण देश कुत्सा, सम दोष निन्दा, प्रतिदोष निन्दा, प्रतिलोम स्तवः, सुकृत अनवेक्षणम्, दुष्कृत अनुकीर्तनम्, पृष्ठ अवधानम्, अतित्यागः, मिथ्या अभिभाषणम्, राज दर्शिनां च तद् वृत्त अन्यत्वम् ॥

Angry appearance when the courtier is in sight; evading or refusal to hear his speech; no inclination to give him a seat or to see him; change in syllables and accents while talking to him; seeing with one eye; brow-beating; biting the lips; rise of sweat; hard breathing and smiling with no palpable cause; talking to himself; sudden bending or raising of the body; touching the body or the seat of another; molestation to another; contempt of learning, caste, and country (of the courtier); condemnation of a colleague of equal defects; condemnation of a man of opposite defects; condemnation of his opponent; failure to acknowledge his good deeds; enumeration of his bad deeds; attention to whoever enters into the chamber; too much gift; uttering falsehood;

saMdarzane kopaH, vAkyasya azravaNa pratiSedhau, Asana cakSuSor adAnam, varNa svara bhedaH, eka akSi bhrukuTy oSTha nirbhogaH, sveda zvAsa smitAnAm asthAna utpattiH, para mantraNam, akasmAd vrajanam, vardhanam anyasya, bhUmi gAtra vilekhanam, anyasya upatodanam, vidyA varNa deza kutsA, sama doSa nindA, pratidoSa nindA, pratiloma stavaH, sukRta anavekSaNam, duSkRta anukIrtanam, pRSTha avadhAnam, atityAgaH, mithyA abhibhASaNam, rAja darzinAM ca tad vRtta anyatvam ॥

वृत्ति विकारं च अवेक्षेत अप्य् अमानुषाणाम् ॥

change in the conduct and attitude of visitors to the king; nay, the courtier shall also note the change in the life of animals other than men.
