विद्या विनय हेतुर् इन्द्रिय जयः काम क्रोध लोभ मान मद हर्ष त्यागात् कार्यः ॥
RESTRAINT of the organs of sense, on which success in study and discipline depends can be enforced by abandoning lust, anger, greed, vanity (mána), haughtiness (mada), and overjoy (harsha).
english translation
vidyA vinaya hetur indriya jayaH kAma krodha lobha mAna mada harSa tyAgAt kAryaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकर्ण त्वग् अक्षि जिह्वा घ्राण इन्द्रियाणां शब्द स्पर्श रूप रस गन्धेष्व् अविप्रतिपत्तिर् इन्द्रिय जयः, शास्त्र अनुष्ठानं वा ॥
Absence of discrepancy (avipratipatti) in the perception of sound, touch, colour, flavour, and scent by means of the ear, the skin, the eyes, the tongue, and the nose, is what is meant by the restraint of the organs of sense. Strict observance of the precepts of sciences also means the same.

karNa tvag akSi jihvA ghrANa indriyANAM zabda sparza rUpa rasa gandheSv avipratipattir indriya jayaH, zAstra anuSThAnaM vA ॥

For the sole aim of all the sciences is nothing but restraint of the organs of sense.

kRtsnaM hi zAstram idam indriya jayaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतद् विरुद्ध वृत्तिर् अवश्य इन्द्रियश् चातुरन्तो अपि राजा सद्यो विनश्यति ॥
Whosoever is of reverse character, whoever has not his organs of sense under his control, will soon perish, though possessed of the whole earth bounded by the four quarters.
