आधिं वा स कामं प्रवेशयेत् ॥
as determined by the witnesses. If he proves his case, he may be permitted to take possession of the property hypothecated to him.
english translation
AdhiM vA sa kAmaM pravezayet ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptरक्षोघ्न रक्षितं वा कर्मणा प्रतिपादयेद्, अन्यत्र ब्राह्मणात् ॥
But if he is not a Bráhman, he may, on his failure to prove his case, be caused to perform such ceremonials as drive out demons (rakshoghna rakshitakam.)
english translation
rakSoghna rakSitaM vA karmaNA pratipAdayed, anyatra brAhmaNAt ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptचतुर् वर्ण आश्रमस्य अयं लोकस्य आचार रक्षणात् । नश्यतां सर्व धर्माणां राजा धर्म प्रवर्तकः ॥
In virtue of his power to uphold the observance of the respective duties of the four castes and of the four divisions of religious life, and in virtue of his power to guard against the violation of the Dharmas, the king is the fountain of justice (dharmapravartaka.)
english translation
catur varNa Azramasya ayaM lokasya AcAra rakSaNAt । nazyatAM sarva dharmANAM rAjA dharma pravartakaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptधर्मश् च व्यवहारश् च चरित्रं राज शासनम् । विवाद अर्थश् चतुष्पादः पश्चिमः पूर्व बाधकः ॥
Sacred law (Dharma), evidence (Vyavahára), history (Charitra), and edicts of kings (Rájasásana) are the four legs of Law. Of these four in order, the later is superior to the one previously named.

dharmaz ca vyavahAraz ca caritraM rAja zAsanam । vivAda arthaz catuSpAdaH pazcimaH pUrva bAdhakaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतत्र सत्ये स्थितो धर्मो व्यवहारस् तु साक्षिषु । चरित्रं संग्रहे पुंसां राज्ञाम् आज्ञा तु शासनम् ॥
Dharma is eternal truth holding its sway over the world; Vyavahára, evidence, is in witnesses; Charitra, history, is to be found in the tradition (sangraha), of the people; and the order of kings is what is called sásana.
english translation
tatra satye sthito dharmo vyavahAras tu sAkSiSu । caritraM saMgrahe puMsAM rAjJAm AjJA tu zAsanam ॥
