तत्र सत्ये स्थितो धर्मो व्यवहारस् तु साक्षिषु । चरित्रं संग्रहे पुंसां राज्ञाम् आज्ञा तु शासनम् ॥

sanskrit

Dharma is eternal truth holding its sway over the world; Vyavahára, evidence, is in witnesses; Charitra, history, is to be found in the tradition (sangraha), of the people; and the order of kings is what is called sásana.

english translation

tatra satye sthito dharmo vyavahAras tu sAkSiSu । caritraM saMgrahe puMsAM rAjJAm AjJA tu zAsanam ॥
