अकृष्यायां भूमौ पशुभ्यो विवीतानि प्रयच्छेत् ॥
THE King shall make provision for pasture grounds on uncultivable tracts.

प्रदिष्ट अभय स्थावर जङ्गमानि च ब्रह्म सोम अरण्यानि तपस्विभ्यो गो रुत पराणि प्रयच्छेत् ॥
Bráhmans shall be provided with forests for sóma plantation, for religious learning, and for the performance of penance, such forests being rendered safe from the dangers from animate or inanimate objects, and being named after the tribal name (gótra) of the Bráhmans resident therein.

तावन् मात्रम् एक द्वारं खात गुप्तं स्वादु फल गुल्म गुच्छम् अकण्टकि द्रुमम् उत्तान तोय आशयं दान्त मृग चतुष्पदं भग्न नख दंष्ट्र व्यालं मार्गयुक हस्ति हस्तिनीक लभं मृग वनं विहार अर्थं राज्ञः कारयेत् ॥
A forest as extensive as the above, provided with only one entrance rendered inaccessible by the construction of ditches all round, with plantations of delicious fruit trees, bushes, bowers, and thornless trees, with an expansive lake of water full of harmless animals, and with tigers (vyála), beasts of prey (márgáyuka), male and female elephants, young elephants.

सर्व अतिथि मृगं प्रत्यन्ते च अन्यन् मृग वनं भूमि वशेन वा निवेशयेत् ॥
On the extreme limit of the country or in any other suitable locality, another game-forest with game-beasts.

कुप्य प्रदिष्टानां च द्रव्याणाम् एक एकशो वनानि निवेशयेत्, द्रव्य वन कर्म अन्तान् अटवीश् च द्रव्य वन अपाश्रयाः ॥
open to all, shall also be made. In view of procuring all kinds of forest-produce described elsewhere, one or several forests shall be specially reserved.
