शिशूनां शस्त्रभीरूणां शस्त्राभावे च योजयेत् । त्वक्सारादिचतुर्वर्गं छेद्ये भेद्ये च बुद्धिमान् ॥१६॥

In the case of children who are afraid of weapons, one should employ them in the absence of weapons. The wise one should use the four groups of bark and pith in cutting and piercing.

english translation

आहार्यच्छेद्यभेद्येषु नखं शक्येषु योजयेत् । विधिः प्रवक्ष्यते पश्चात् क्षारवह्निजलौकसाम् ॥१७॥

In cases of extraction, cutting, piercing, and in cases where nails can be used, the nail should be employed. The procedure for using alkali, fire, and leeches will be described later.

ये स्युर्मुखगता रोगा नेत्रवर्त्मगताश्च ये । गोजीशेफालिकाशाकपत्रैर्विस्रावयेत्तु तान् ॥१८॥

"Diseases that are located in the mouth or along the eye's pathway, or those that have entered the body through the mouth or eye, should be expelled using medicinal plants such as Goji, Shephali, and Ashaka."

एष्येष्वेषण्यलाभे तु बालाङ्गुल्यङ्कुरा हिताः । शस्त्राण्येतानि मतिमान् शुद्धशैक्यायसानि तु । कारयेत् करणप्राप्तं कर्मारं कर्मकोविदम् ॥१९॥

But when the desired object is not obtained, the fingers of a child are beneficial. The wise one should make these instruments out of pure iron, employing a blacksmith skilled in his craft who has been tested.

प्रयोगज्ञस्य वैद्यस्य सिद्धिर्भवति नित्यशः । तस्मात् परिचयं कुर्याच्छस्त्राणां ग्रहणे सदा ॥२०॥

The success of a physician who knows the application is always certain. Therefore, one should always have familiarity with the instruments of surgery.
