एतानि देहे सर्वस्मिन् देहस्यावयवे तथा । सन्धौ कोष्ठे धमन्यां च यथायोगं प्रयोजयेत् ॥१६॥

These should be applied to the entire body, to the parts of the body, to the joints, the abdomen, and the arteries, as appropriate.

यन्त्रकर्माणि तु- निर्घातनपूरणबन्धनव्यूहनवर्तनचालनविवर्तनविवरणपीडनमार्गविशोधनविकर्षणाहरणाञ्छनोन्नमन- विनमनभञ्जनोन्मथनाचूषणैषणदारणर्जूकरणप्रक्षालनप्रधमनप्रमार्जनानि चतुर्विंशतिः ॥१७॥

As for the mechanical actions: striking, filling, binding, arranging, turning, moving, revolving, opening, pressing, clearing the path, dragging, carrying, cutting, raising, lowering, breaking, uprooting, sucking, searching, crushing, straightening, washing, blowing, wiping - these are the twenty-four.

स्वबुद्ध्या चापि विभजेद्यन्त्रकर्माणि बुद्धिमान् । असङ्ख्येयविकल्पत्वाच्छल्यानामिति निश्चयः ॥१८॥

And the wise one should also classify the mechanical actions by his own intellect. This is the conclusion due to the innumerable variations of the weapons.

तत्र, अतिस्थूलम्, असारम्, अतिदीर्घम्, अतिह्रस्वम्, अग्राहि, विषमग्राहि, वक्रं, शिथिलम्, अत्युन्नतम्, मृदुकीलं, मृदुमुखं, मृदुपाशम्, इति द्वादश यन्त्रदोषाः ॥१९॥

There, the twelve faults of a machine are: too thick, insubstantial, too long, too short, ungraspable, unevenly graspable, crooked, loose, too high, soft-pointed, soft-mouthed, and soft-strung.

एतैर्दोषैर्विनिर्मुक्तं यन्त्रमष्टादशाङ्गुलम् । प्रशस्तं भिषजा ज्ञेयं तद्धि कर्मसु योजयेत् ॥२०॥

The instrument free from these defects, measuring eighteen finger-breadths, should be known as excellent by physicians and should be employed in surgical procedures.
