आलेप आद्य उपक्रमः , एष सर्वशोफानां सामान्यः प्रधानतमश्च, तं च प्रतिरोगं वक्ष्यामः- ततो बन्धः प्रधानं, तेन शुद्धिर्व्रणरोपणमस्थिसन्धिस्थैर्यं च ॥३॥
A medicinal plaster (Alepana) is the primary and most important remedy for all types of swelling. We will now discuss the specific plasters for different diseases. However, bandages (Vandha) play a more crucial role as they are essential for purification, healing of ulcers, and stability of joints.

तत्र प्रतिलोममालिम्पेत् । प्रतिलोमे हि सम्यगौषधमवतिष्ठतेऽनुप्रविशति रोमकूपान् स्वेदवाहिभिश्च सिरामुखैर्वीर्यं प्राप्नोति ॥४॥
medicinal plaster should be applied in the opposite direction to the local hair growth (Pratiloma). When applied in this manner, the plaster adheres firmly to the affected area and naturally permeates through the hair follicles and sweat ducts, thereby delivering its potency and efficacy.

One should not neglect a plaster once it becomes dry, as it may otherwise cause pain elsewhere. A dried plaster can become harmful and act as a caustic agent.
