अत ऊर्ध्वं कषायस्नेहपाकक्रममुपदेक्ष्यामः | तत्र केचिदाहुः- त्वक्पत्रफलमूलादीनां भागस्तच्चतुर्गुणं जलं चतुर्भागावशेषं निष्क्वाथ्यापहरेदित्येष कषायपाककल्पः; स्नेहप्रसृतेषु षट्सु चतुर्गुणं द्रवमावाप्य चतुरश्चाक्षसमान् भेषजपिण्डानित्येष स्नेहपाककल्पः | एतत्तु न सम्यक्; कस्मात्? आगमासिद्धत्वात् ||६||

Now, we will discuss the preparation process of the decoction of oily substances. Some say that the portion derived from the bark, leaves, fruits, and roots should be four parts, and the water should be four parts as well, which should be decocted and then strained. This is the method for preparing the decoction. When the oil is prepared, six parts of oil are mixed with four parts of liquid, creating a balanced mixture of herbal preparations, and this is the method of preparing oil. However, this is not correct. Why? Because it is not supported by scripture.

Let us explain the measurement of palakuda and similar items. There are twelve types of grains, with medium being golden gram, weighing sixteen parts. Alternatively, medium unfiltered grains weigh nineteen and a half parts. For those grains, one-third is taken as the measurement. From there, the measurement increases fourfold, resulting in palakuda and similar substances, where one hundred palas equal one tola. This is the measurement for dry substances, and for moist or liquid substances, the measure is doubled.

In the preparation of decoctions, one should take the appropriate measurements of dried, sun-dried parts of the bark, leaves, fruits, and roots, cutting them into pieces. The cuts should be done in such a way that they are differentiated, and they should be mixed with water, either in eightfold or sixteenfold proportions. The mixture should be placed in a vessel and boiled until one-fourth remains. This is the method for preparing a decoction. The quantity of the liquid is four times that of the fat, and the medicine’s extract should be a fourth of the total. After combining these, one should cook the mixture until it reaches the desired consistency. Alternatively, in the case of decoction preparation, one should take equal measurements of the dried bark, leaves, fruits, and roots, and boil them in four parts of water until one-fourth remains. This is the method for preparing a decoction; the medicinal paste, prepared from the fat and the extract, should be four times the quantity of the liquid and should be cooked together until well combined.
