तद्बाहुफलवर्गैक्यान् मूलम् कर्णश् चलाभिधः। त्रिज्याभ्यस्तम् भुजफलम् चलकर्णविभाजितम् ॥

Add the square of the result (just found) to that of the sine of the 2nd Bhuja-phala: the square root of the sum is the Śíghra-karṇa or 2nd hypothenuse. Find the (2nd) Bhuja-phala of the planet (as mentioned in śloka 39th;) multiply it by the radius and divide the product by the 2nd hypothenuse (above found).

लब्धस्य चापम् लिप्तादिफलम् *शैघ्र्यम् इदम् स्मृतम् । (C शैघ्रम्) एतद् आद्ये कुजादीनाम् चतुर्थे चैव कर्मणि॥

Find the arc whose sine is equal to the quotient (just found); the number of the minutes contained in the arc is called the Śíghra-phala[3] (or 2nd equation of the planet.) The 2nd equation of Mars &c. is employed in the first and fourth operations (which will be explained in the sequel).

(In order to find the true places of the Sun and Moon,) a single operation called manda (or operation of finding the first equation,) is to be employed, (that is to say, when you want to find the true places of the Sun and Moon, find their first equation and apply it, as will be mentioned in 45th Śloka, to their mean places: thus you have the true places of the Sun and Moon). But in respect of Mars &c. 1st Śíghra operation (or operation of finding the 2nd equation,) 2nd Manda operation, 3rd Manda operation, and 4th Śíghra operation, are to be employed successively.

मध्ये शीघ्रफलस्यार्धम् मान्दम् अर्धफलम् तथा । मध्यग्रहे *मन्दफलम् सकलम् शैघ्र्यम् एव च ॥(C पुनर् मान्दम्)

Find the second equation (from the mean place of a planet:) apply the half of it to the mean place, and (to the result) apply the half of the first equation (found from that result; from the amount) find the 1st equation again, and apply the whole of it to the mean place of the planet and (to that rectified mean place)[1] apply the whole of the 2nd equation (found from the rectified mean place: thus you will find the true place of the planet).

In the Śíghra and Manda operations, the (second or first) equation of a planet in minutes is to be additive when the (second or first) Kendra (of the planet) is less than 6 signs; but when it is greater than 6 signs, the (2nd or 1st) equation is to be subtractive.
