अचिन्त्याव्यक्तरूपाय निर्गुणाय गुणात्मने। समस्तजगदाधारमूर्तये ब्रह्मणे नमः ॥
Salutation to that Supreme Being which is of inconceivable and imperceptible form, void of properties (of all created things), the external source of wisdom and happiness, and the supporter of the whole world in the shapes (of Brahmá, Vishnu and Siva.)

acintyAvyaktarUpAya nirguNAya guNAtmane। samastajagadAdhAramUrtaye brahmaNe namaH ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअल्पावशिष्टे तु कृते मयो नाम महासुरः। रहस्यम् परमम् पुण्यम् जिज्ञासुर् ज्ञानम् उत्तमम् ॥
Some time before the end of the Krita yuga, a great Demon named Maya, being desirous of obtaining the sound, secret, excellent, sacred and complete knowledge of Astronomy

alpAvaziSTe tu kRte mayo nAma mahAsuraH। rahasyam paramam puNyam jijJAsur jJAnam uttamam ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवेदाङ्गम् अग्र्यम् अखिलम् ज्योतिषाम् गतिकारणम्। आराधयन् विवस्वन्तम् तपस् तेपे सुदुश्चरम् ॥
which is the best of the six sciences subordinate to the Veda, practised the most difficult penance, the worship of the Sun.
english translation
vedAGgam agryam akhilam jyotiSAm gatikAraNam। ArAdhayan vivasvantam tapas tepe suduzcaram ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतोषितस् तपसा तेन प्रीतस् तस्मै वरार्थिने। ग्रहाणाम् चरितम् प्रादान् मयाय सविता स्वयम् ॥प्रादान् मयाय सविता स्वयम् ॥
The self-delightful Sun, being gratified at such (difficult) penance of Maya, bestowed on him the knowledge of the science of Astronomy which he was inquiring after.

toSitas tapasA tena prItas tasmai varArthine। grahANAm caritam prAdAn mayAya savitA svayam ॥prAdAn mayAya savitA svayam ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptविदितस् ते *मया भावस् तोषितस् तपसा ह्य् अहम्। (ड् मयाभावस्) दद्याम् कालाश्रयम् ज्ञानम् ग्रहाणाम् चरितम् महत् ॥
(The illustrious Sun said.The illustrious Sun said.) (O Maya,) I am informed of your intention (of attaining the knowledge of the science of Astronomy) and pleased with your penance. I, therefore will grant you the great knowledge of Astronomy which treats of time.

viditas te *mayA bhAvas toSitas tapasA hy aham। (D mayAbhAvas) dadyAm kAlAzrayam jJAnam grahANAm caritam mahat ॥
