ये देहभाजस्त्रिगुणप्रधाना गुणान् विपश्यन्त्युत वा तमश्च । यन्मायया मोहितचेतसस्ते विदुः स्वसंस्थं न बहिःप्रकाशाः ९-८-२३ ।।

sanskrit

My Lord, You are fully situated in everyone’s heart, but the living entities, covered by the material body, cannot see You, for they are influenced by the external energy, conducted by the three modes of material nature. Their intelligence being covered by sattva-guṇa, rajo-guṇa and tamo-guṇa, they can see only the actions and reactions of these three modes of material nature. Because of the actions and reactions of the mode of ignorance, whether the living entities are awake or sleeping, they can see only the workings of material nature; they cannot see Your Lordship. ।। 9-8-23 ।।

english translation

हे स्वामी, आप सबों के हृदयों मे भलीभाँति स्थित हैं, किन्तु भौतिक शरीर से आवृत सारे जीव आपको नहीं देख पाते क्योंकि वे त्रिगुणमयी माया द्वारा प्रेरित बहिरंगा शक्ति के द्वारा प्रभावित रहते हैं। उनकी बुद्धि सतो, रजो तथा तमो गुणों से ढकी होने से वे प्रकृतिके इन तीनों गुणों की क्रियाओं- प्रतिक्रियाओं को ही देख पाते हैं। तमोगुण की क्रिया-प्रतिक्रियाओं के कारण जाग्रत या सुप्त जीव प्रकृति की कार्यविधि को ही देख पाते हैं; वे आप (भगवान्) को नहीं देख सकते। ।। ९-८-२३ ।।
